Assistant Professor of Multimedia Journalism

Position Overview:

The Department of Communication, housed in the College of Arts and Sciences, is seeking candidates for a tenure-track position Assistant Professor position for the 2025-2026 academic year beginning August 2025. The Journalism major confers Bachelor of Science degrees upon students who complete a series of required core, major, and elective courses designated among two tracks: Multimedia Journalism and Sports Broadcasting.

Qualifications:

A successful candidate will possess expertise in multimedia journalism and will be able to teach courses that focus on the audio, visual, and textual formats of journalism. The candidate must be proficient in traditional communication skills (e.g., researching, writing, reporting), but must also be proficient in new media skills (e.g., recording, editing, producing visual and audio content). We encourage applicants who can teach multimedia skills, such as, but not limited to, podcasting, photo-journalism, video production, and social media reporting. Applicants should also be able to teach foundational theoretical courses in journalism (e.g., Media Ethics).

A successful candidate will be responsible for teaching both required and elective courses in the major, as well as broader topics in The Department of Communication. Applicants should be willing and able to update and modify existing courses in the Journalism curriculum to multimedia reporting, so that our students remain adept with the latest Journalism technologies. The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of journalistic ethics, accuracy, fairness and impartiality in order to serve as mentor to student journalism projects on campus, such as advising the student newspaper and working with the campus ESPN studio.

Minimum Job Requirements for Tenure-Track Applicants

  • Terminal degree in fine arts, communication, journalism, or related disciplines
  • Clear research agenda evident through peer-reviewed scholarship
  • Professional experience as a multimedia journalist
  • Awareness of industry / job skill requirements
  • Teaching experience
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop new courses in the Journalism curriculum that keep students educated on the newest technologies used in the field of journalism
  • Student advising
  • Outcomes assessment
  • Service to the department, university, and community
  • Promotion of the program for recruitment and retention

In addition, although Buffalo has a reputation for high snowfall, the city is actually located north of the snow-belt area, providing access to several ski resorts.

Compensation and Benefits:

Salary Range: $55,000 to $60,000 annually.

*Please note that the compensation information is a good faith estimate of the base pay for this position. The selected candidate’s actual base pay will be based on job-related, non-discriminatory factors including experience. Information about the total compensation package for this position will be provided during the interview process.

Benefits are available the first of the month after the full-time faculty’s date of hire and include – health, dental and vision insurance, life and long-term disability insurance, and retirement plan enrollment is available to full-time faculty with contribution from Canisius after one year. One year waiting period may be waived provided the person was employed in higher education for at least one-year full time within three years prior to hire date. The university contribution would not begin until proof of prior service is received. Tuition benefits are also available for full-time faculty and their qualified dependents.

Posted Range

USD $55,000.00 – USD $60,000.00 /Yr.
