Description:The Hesburgh Libraries at the University of Notre Dame seeks a skilled, multilingual, collaborative, and service-oriented professional for the position of East Asian Studies and Education Librarian. Reporting to the department head for Education & Engagement, the successful candidate will serve as liaison to the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures and the Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies, engaging in outreach, instruction, and personalized research support for faculty and students. The East Asian Studies and Education Librarian will also manage, strengthen, and expand the East Asian Studies collection in order to support Notre Dame’s growing strengths in East Asian Studies.

The East Asian Studies and Education Librarian will be a core member of the Education & Engagement department, supporting departmental initiatives, projects, and goals including developing and maintaining digital learning objects, developing and facilitating student workshops, assessing student learning outcomes, and participating in instruction for foundational undergraduate courses. The ideal candidate will enable greater research productivity, sustainable publication, and the dissemination of scholarship and data.

Responsibilities
Subject Liaison

• Provide instruction and research support for East Asian Studies students, faculty, affiliates, courses, and programs
• Contribute to the development, description, promotion, preservation, and assessment of multi-format, interdisciplinary collections that serve the needs of students and faculty in East Asian Studies
• Engage in proactive outreach to, and collaboration with, the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures and the Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies to expand and develop the relationship between Hesburgh Libraries and the campus East Asian Studies community
• Create guides to library resources that support academic work and assignments and design and develop additional resources and programs to support East Asian Studies.

Education and Engagement

• Provide information literacy and library research instruction for Writing and Rhetoric and University Seminar courses as appropriate.
• Collaborate with subject liaisons and functional area specialists to create and deliver specialized workshops or other classes as appropriate.
• Participate in and contribute to library-sponsored professional development activities designed to improve library teaching skills, including relevant department activities, committees, teams, and communities of practice.

Professional Contributions and Institutional Service

• Pursue professional development and engage in professional service and/or research in keeping with the Libraries’ criteria for reappointment and promotion. As members of the regular faculty of the University, library faculty contribute service to the Libraries and to the University and/or the broader community and contribute to the University’s mission and strategic initiatives.

The East Asian Studies Collection

The Hesburgh Libraries East Asian Studies collection serves the East Asian research and teaching community at Notre Dame, including faculty and students from the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures and the Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies, which draws fellows from the Departments of History, Political Science, Anthropology, Sociology, Economics, Theology, Philosophy, and Film, Theatre, and Television; as well as the Peace Studies and Global Affairs programs. The collection has grown significantly over the past decade and is utilized by an active and growing faculty and student body. The Chinese collection, the largest of the East Asian collections, has relative strengths in literature, philosophy, religion, and history. There are opportunities for growth in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean materials and for collaboration with the Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies.

The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures offers majors, supplemental majors, and minors in Chinese and Japanese and a minor in Korean.

The mission of the Liu Institute is to provide a forum for integrated and multidisciplinary research and teaching on Asia and its diaspora. It supports innovative projects that actively combine teaching, research, and social engagement. The Liu Institute works closely with the East Asian Studies Librarian in identifying sources of funding for collection development.

Qualifications:
Required Qualifications

• MLS degree from an ALA-accredited program or non-U.S. equivalent, or equivalent terminal degree. The degree must be completed before the candidate’s starting date of employment;
• Demonstrated linguistic proficiency in Chinese and excellent oral and written communication skills in English as evidenced by application materials;
• Familiarity with publishing, scholarship, and vendor landscape for Chinese, Japanese, and/or Korean Studies;
• Teaching experience, preferably in an academic library setting;
• Demonstrated knowledge of current relevant library and/or scholarly communications trends and issues;
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively and professionally both as part of a team and independently.

Preferred Qualifications

• Advanced knowledge of Chinese, Japanese, and/or Korean history, literature, and culture, including scholarly resources as demonstrated through advanced disciplinary coursework or degree;
• Knowledge of other East Asian languages;
• Ability to collaborate with cataloging personnel to appropriately describe East Asian materials;
• Knowledge of evidence-based practices in teaching and instruction;
• Experience with current and emergent technologies and their applications in libraries and higher education, including but not limited to creating online learning objects, tutorials.

Some faculty and staff at Hesburgh Libraries work remotely one or two days per week, subject to programmatic and organizational needs.
