Responsibilities

DESCRIPTION:

The Academic Dean, Business & Engineering, manages overall operations in accordance with federal and state regulations, college policies and procedures, contractual agreements, and strategic planning goals and objectives. Administers and coordinates all operational matters related to student learning, instruction, and program and curriculum development. Hires and supervises faculty and staff and serves as a liaison with internal and external constituents. Ensures institutional and program accreditation compliance. Develops and manages budgets.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Sets consistent and strong academic standards for assigned instructional programs by ensuring curricula are current, meet state guidelines and professional certifications and adhere to regional accreditation standards.

2. Serves as a catalyst for innovative approaches and solutions for program enhancements to best meet the academic needs of students.

3. Develops and executes the department’s strategic plan consistent with the College’s values, goals and objectives.

4. Recruits and supervises faculty and staff; coordinates orientation of the department’s faculty and staff; recommends faculty contract lengths and workloads; supports faculty and staff achievements and challenges by providing recommendations for professional development and timely performance evaluations. Encourages innovation in teaching and learning.

5. Evaluates program performance and program and course content. Participates in annual program review and assesses student learning outcomes at the department and course level.

6. Provides conflict resolution, mediation, and negotiation of student, staff, and faculty that are beyond the scope of Student Services, such as concerns involving academic matters, faculty, or instruction. Refers unresolved student concerns to the appropriate institutional area.

7. Works collaboratively with faculty and campus leaders on strategic enrollment management. Creates the department’s class schedules that optimize classroom utilization, class size, student needs, and the college’s enrollment goals.

8. Maintains a thorough understanding of the current collective bargaining agreement and adheres to the tenets of the agreement in carrying out responsibilities as Academic Dean.

9. Assists faculty and staff in the supervision, coordination, security and maintenance of equipment, supplies and facilities. Coordinates the implementation of safety procedures and activities that promote safety for students and employees.

10. Assists in the resolution of transfer credit questions and other questions pertaining to student advisement.

11. Coordinates textbook orders for departmental courses and assists in the preparation of accurate college catalog information and course descriptions.

12. Maintains liaison role with other areas of the college and external partners including but not limited to universities, area high schools, industry, and other organizations.

13. Performs leadership role in grant development for the department. Recommends and manages budgets to meet department, division, and college needs and goals.

14. Periodically collects and compiles data or verifies legislative information. Researches, analyzes, and interprets federal and state laws and regulations and communicates research findings to appropriate supervisors.

15. Performs all site and position specific responsibilities as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Master’s degree from an accredited institution in or related to one of the department’s disciplines.

2. Teaching experience at the post-secondary level in one of the department’s disciplines.

3. Three years of leadership experience in a college or university setting.

1. Doctoral degree from an accredited institution

WORK ENVIRONMENT and SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS:

1. Works in an office, classroom, and/or field environment.

2. Works flexible hours including evenings and weekends.

3. Travels between campuses and local destinations.

4. Work may require occasional overnight travel.

Therefore, as a condition of employment, the incumbent is expected to be available by cell phone and is required to provide their current cell phone number to the Office of Human Resources and to their immediate supervisor.
