Position Summary

The Journal of South Asian and Middle East Studies (JSAMES) has been published at Villanova University for 47 years. The Managing Editor will ensure the operation of the Journal of South Asian and Middle East Studies, including communicating with authors, reviewers, and the editorial board; organizing manuscript submissions and the journal’s peer review process; maintaining communication with the journal’s host (The University of Pennsylvania Press) about all financial, subscription, and production matters; organizing and implementing all journal related events such as monthly working group meetings, workshops, and guest lecturers. Responsibilities will include including booking speakers, organizing travel, paying honoraria, and other event related tasks; working with book review editors to secure books and reviewers; supporting Villanova faculty affiliated with the Center for Arab and Islamic Studies (CAIS) to program events; recruiting potential authors, reviewers, and board members; maintaining relevant digital databases (such as reviewers and authors); working closely with the journal’s editor to promote the JSAMES

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the peer-review process for all journal submissions
  • Work with the University of Pennsylvania Press Journal division on all matters related to the journal’s operation, including but not limited to: the manuscript submission system, budgets and payments, production and design, and all subscription related issues
  • Work closely with the journal’s editor to ensure a timely peer review process and the publication of the journal’s two issues per year
  • Organize and coordinate all logistics for workshops and events hosted by the Center for Arab and Islamic Studies, including but not limited to the South Asian and Middle East Studies Working Group monthly events, guest speakers, and journal workshops
  • Liaise with journal subscribers and libraries to increase the journal’s subscription base
  • Manage all journal related communication with the editorial board, authors, reviewers, and publishers
  • Organize and coordinate logistics for any journal events held off Villanova’s campus, including conference events
  • Develop and maintain the journal’s digital database and archive
  • Develop and maintain manuscript and book reviewer database
  • Coordinate programming with other Villanova Centers, Departments, and units
  • Promote the journal to international centers and universities

Minimum Qualifications

Formal Education:

  • Bachelor of Arts

Minimum Work Experience:

  • 1-2 years of experience working in a university, publishing, or community organization.

Work skills:

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or higher (in South Asian, Middle East, or Global Studies)
  • 3-5 years of experience working in a university, publishing, or community organization; working with a diverse group of stakeholders; financial management; event planning; familiarity with academic publishing; experience in the fields of South Asian and/or Middle East Studies
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; knowledge of excel; strong editing skills
