The School of Education & Social Sciences at Barton College invites applicants for a full-time Assistant/Associate Professor of Education position with a start date of August 2025.
Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to teaching undergraduate students in a liberal arts setting. Additional responsibilities include academic advising, student recruitment, maintaining a program of active student engagement, meaningful participation in the life of the School of Education & Social Sciences and Barton College, and a commitment to active contributions in the profession. These contributions may include mentoring of student projects and development of pedagogy that engages students and fosters deep learning.
Job Responsibilities:
Assistant/associate professor responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Serve as coordinator of the traditional studies programs in the Teacher Education Program, including Elementary Education and Middle School Education and serve as academic advisor for students in these programs.
- Teach a 12-semester hour course load each semester which may include traditional in-person courses, online courses (synchronous and asynchronous), and hybrid courses with a mix of these two formats (additional teaching opportunities during summer sessions in the residency licensure program are available).
- Lead methods courses in mathematics and science instruction for candidates who plan to teach in elementary and middle school classrooms.
- Deliver methods courses in elementary reading and literacy and other general methods courses, such as courses on curriculum development and implementation, and courses related to assessment in both the traditional and residency licensure programs.
- Provide guidance and oversight for students completing and submitting edTPA portfolios.
- Participate in the ongoing assessment and development of the curriculum in the Teacher Education Program.
- Work closely with the Office of Admissions and marketing team to promote Teacher Education programs and recruit students through developing web site content, flyers/brochures, and promotional emails.
- Collaborate closely with the Teacher Licensure and Operations Coordinator on reports.
- Participate in virtual and face-to-face recruiting and orientation events for the School of Education.
- Monitor prerequisites and progress of students in the Elementary and Middle School traditional programs and serve as academic advisor to students in the Teacher Education Traditional Program.
- Serve as a mentor/coach to students in the traditional education programs.
- Supervise; as needed, student teachers, as part of the teaching load.
- Serve as an advisor to an on-campus student organization, such as SNCAE.
- Mentor and advise students.
- Serve as an active faculty member of the Barton College School of Education & Social Sciences.
- Support student recruitment including participation in on-campus open houses.
- Display strong communication and interpersonal skills with a commitment to working with students and colleagues of diverse backgrounds.
Desired Education, Skills, and Experience:
Minimum qualifications:
- Master’s degree in an appropriate Education field from an accredited Educator Preparation Program (terminal degree is preferred for tenure-track positions).
- Current teaching license in Elementary Education.
- Relevant experience teaching in public school settings, particularly in elementary and/or middle school classrooms.
- Professional development in the Science of Reading, through college/university coursework and/or successful completion of the LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) professional development program.
- Knowledge of edTPA preparation or experience with the national board licensure process.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required with the ability to interact and communicate effectively with all levels within and without the organization.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
- Must be able to work effectively, independent of direct supervision.
- Strong organizational and planning skills and ability to handle details.
- Professional collegiality is expected, as well as the demonstration of appropriate professional dispositions and ethics.
- This position requires significant on-campus presence.
Preferred qualifications:
- Teaching experience at the undergraduate level.
- Experience in mentoring teacher candidates and/or beginning teachers.
- Teaching experience with in-person and distance education formats.
- Teaching license in additional related fields, such as Middle School Education and Reading Specialist.
- An earned doctorate in a field of teacher education related to the responsibilities of the position.
