Position Description
The Department of Curriculum and Instruction (C&I) at Texas State University, a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), invites applications for a tenure-track position in elementary education with specialization in mathematics education. The position will be housed in the EC-6 ESL undergraduate and graduate teacher education programs. The position will be filled at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.
Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate elementary and middle level education courses focused on mathematics and developing and publishing a sustained line of academic research in that field. Other responsibilities include contributing to department and college efforts in program planning, implementation, and evaluation as well as collaboration initiatives with PK-12 partners in education; engaging in innovative program development efforts in line with accreditation/state mandates and professional standards; supporting student recruitment efforts; serving on masters and doctoral committees; securing external research funding; and providing service to the department, college, university, and the professional community.
Texas State University is a doctoral granting public research institution that holds a Carnegie Classification of Research 2 and is engaged in a strategic plan to attain the Carnegie Research 1 designation by 2027.
Texas State University is a Hispanic Serving Institution of over 40,000 students located along the ancient and sacred San Marcos River in San Marcos, Texas. The university also has a campus in Round Rock, Texas, just north of Austin.
Through school and community partnerships, the Department seeks to advance research-based inquiry, theoretical frameworks and instructional approaches that influence practice and policy. We seek a dynamic, innovative scholar who merits appointment as Assistant or Associate Professor. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and rank. The successful candidate will be headquartered at the universitys main campus in San Marcos and may teach courses, as needed, at the San Marcos and Round Rock campuses, online, or at area school district campuses with whom we partner for field-based learning.
Position will begin in Fall of 2026. All positions are subject to availability of funds.
Required Qualifications
Required Qualifications for Assistant Professor Rank:
- Earned doctorate by hire date in mathematics education, or a closely related field, from an accredited institution of higher education.
- Record of, or demonstrated potential for, excellence in scholarly research activity in the field of mathematics education as evidenced by refereed presentations, publications, etc.
- Record of experience working with culturally and linguistically diverse populations in high-needs educational settings.
Required Qualifications for Associate Professor Rank:
- Earned doctorate in mathematics education, or a closely related field, from an accredited institution of higher education.
- Established line of scholarly research activity in mathematics education, as evidenced by refereed publications, national/international presentations, and other scholarly products commensurate with rank.
- Record of experience working with culturally and linguistically diverse populations in high-needs educational settings.
- Record of excellence in teaching methods courses, or closely related courses, in university settings and experience with multiple modes of instructional delivery (e.g., in-person, hybrid, asynchronous online).
- Record of leadership in service at the department, college, university, and/or professional level.
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications for Assistant Professor Rank:
- Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to mathematics education research that creates and supports learning environments in which students engage with mathematics in meaningful ways, and which values contributions from learners of various backgrounds.
- Knowledge of best practices for teacher education, and ability to teach cohorts of ESL, bilingual education, and/or special education majors.
- Record of excellence in teaching or assisting with methods courses, or closely related courses, in university settings.
- Record of mathematics teaching experience in PreK – 12th grade educational settings.
- Record of, or demonstrated potential for, establishing collaborative partnerships across university, PK-12, and community contexts in teaching, research, service, or public pedagogy endeavors.
- Record of, or demonstrated potential for, securing external funding such as grants to support scholarly activity.
- Record of, or demonstrated potential for, service at the department, college, university, and/or professional level.
Preferred Qualifications for Associate Professor Rank:
- Evidence of research and practice that creates and supports learning environments in which students engage with mathematics in meaningful ways, and which values contributions from learners of various backgrounds.
- Demonstrated knowledge of best practices for teacher education, and ability to teach cohorts of ESL, bilingual education, and/or special education majors.
- Record of experience building and maintaining collaborative partnerships across university, PK-12, and community contexts in teaching, research, service, or public pedagogy endeavors.
- Record of mathematics teaching experience in PreK – 12th grade educational settings.
- Record of experience mentoring graduate students, such as serving on capstone, thesis, or dissertation committees.
- Record of success securing external funding such as grants to support scholarly activity.
- Record of experience engaging in innovative program development and design in line with accreditation or state mandates and professional standards.
