Summary of Position

Ferris State University is seeking a 9-month tenure-track Assistant Professor of Education who can demonstrate excellence in teaching special education and other related courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels in the School of Education. The candidate selected for the position must reside in Michigan after acceptance of employment and possess the ability to deliver face-to-face and online instruction at both the main campus and other locations. This successful candidate will also advise and mentor education students throughout their program.

The department is especially interested in an individual committed to teaching, scholarship, and service in a highly collaborative environment that is dedicated to the preparation of the next generation of educators to be adaptive teachers and learners, problem-solvers, and inspirers of learning.

The anticipated start date of this position is January 2026 or August 2026 at the latest.

Position Type: Faculty – Temporary & Continuing

Required Education

Master’s degree in education or a closely related area with a minimum of 18 graduate credits in special education.

Required Work Experience

Three years of successful special education teaching experience in a P-12 setting. Two years of part-time is equivalent to one year of full-time.

Required Licenses and Certifications

Certification in special education or eligible for certification in special education.

Additional Education/Experiences to be Considered

Doctoral degree in education or closely related area.

Preferred experience in case management, service provider, IEP development, and accommodation/modification implementation.

Teaching and curriculum development experience in undergraduate or graduate education courses.

Understanding of special education policies at the Michigan (MARSE), federal, and local levels.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

Faculty members also have professional responsibilities which may include advising students, orientation and registration of students, participation in University committees, keeping regular posted office hours (which are scheduled at times convenient for students), and participation in traditional functions which have academic significance (ex. reporting initial student participation data and submitting final grades on time).

Along with teaching courses on main campus, faculty members may be required to teach off-campus or in an on-line environment.

Demonstrates an understanding and commitment to the mission, vision, and values of Ferris State University, especially in working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members

Teach courses in education- general education, special education, or any other area qualified.

Support, promote, and develop university student enrollment and retention initiatives.

Participate in committees within the department, college, and university.

Assist in data analysis and writing reports for internal use (department continuous improvement process) and external needs from the Michigan Department of Education and CAEP/AAQEP accreditation.

Cultivate an environment of belonging that values, respects, supports, and celebrates individual similarities and differences, allowing students, faculty and staff to thrive authentically.

Any other duties assigned within the position classification area.

Demonstrated excellent skills in teaching, scholarship, and service.

Demonstrated successful experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
