General Function (Description):Perform translational research and establish educational programs focusing on prostate cancer health disparities in underserved minority populations. Duties also include using quantitative and qualitative research methods to help make program planning and evaluation decisions.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop an independent translational research project focusing on prostate cancer healthdisparities and other relevant areas emphasizing reducing cancer health disparities amongAfrican Americans and underserved populations.
  • Conduct translational research in social science fields, i.e., research focused on analyzinghow people behave in different situations and how they can be helped to improve theirdecision-making abilities.
  • Submit grant proposals focused on translational research in prostate cancer and its impact onunderserved populations.
  • Provide community outreach and service through public lectures and presentations.*Collaborate with colleagues on interdisciplinary research projects.
  • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed academic journals.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest translational research and trends in social sciences andbehavior.
  • Teach social and behavioral science courses.
  • Evaluate student learning and progress.
  • Attend and present at academic and national scientific conferences.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong analytical capabilities and ability to interpret data for research grant applications.
  • Excellent written, oral communication, and report writing abilities.
  • Grant writing skills are a must. Demonstrated experience securing funding through grantapplications.
  • Experienced problem-solving skills to develop new and improved solutions.
  • Computational skills to manage data and potentially create scientific models and simulations.
  • Effective project management skills.
  • History of experience working in an ethnically and culturally diverse atmosphere.
  • Expertise in hiring, building a team from scratch, and managing conflict if needed.
  • Skilled at creating a vision and overall strategic competencies.
  • Financial acumen, including budget management/expertise, is a plus.

Minimum Hiring Standards:

Education: A Ph.D. degree in behavioral science, sociology, social work, or psychology, or a terminal degree in a relevant field.

Years of Experience: At least 5+ years of academic/industry or research and teaching experience in social and/or behavioral sciences. Candidates with ongoing research support will be given preference.

Years of Management/Supervisor Experience:At least 5 years of experience managing independent research programs.
