Job Summary

The Dean of Students serves as the chief student services officer at Chicago State University, providing strategic leadership and oversight for a comprehensive portfolio of student affairs programs that support student engagement, wellbeing, and success. Reporting to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs, the Dean leads a student-centered division encompassing Housing and Residence Life, Student Engagement (including Greek Life, Student Government, and Campus Events), Career Development, Counseling/Abilities Services, the Cougar Food Pantry, and cultural support centers such as the Latino Resource Center, and African American Male Resource Center.

In this capacity, the Dean of Students bridges academic and student affairs, leads institutional efforts related to co-curricular assessment and accreditation (HLC), and ensures responsive, data-informed practices aligned with university goals. The Dean also manages student crisis response, guides the student conduct process in partnership with Judicial Affairs, and plays a key role in external partnerships, compliance efforts, and cross-campus collaboration to cultivate an inclusive, engaging, and supportive campus environment

Job Description

Essential Job Function, Duties & Responsibilities

  • Serves as the chief student services officer, providing visionary leadership and direction for the Division of Student Affairs in alignment with the University’s mission, vision, and core values.
  • Supervises and supports key Student Affairs departments, including Housing and Residence Life, Student Engagement, Judicial Affairs, Dual Enrollment, Career Development, Counseling/Abilities Office, Campus Ministry, and the Dean’s administrative team.
  • Oversees the Cougar Food Pantry operations, ensuring compliance with the Greater Chicago Food Depository and meeting students’ basic needs through intentional support and community partnerships.
  • Leads the division’s assessment and strategic planning efforts, using data to measure impact, inform practice, and enhance student engagement, persistence, and success.
  • Create a related DoSA Strategic Plan with goals and metrics using our newly approved strategic plan (2025 to 2030).
  • Serves as the institutional lead on HLC-related co-curricular assessment initiatives and student success components tied to reaccreditation and continuous improvement.
  • Acts as a strategic partner with the Dean of Student Success and within the Provost Council, bridging the gap between academic and student affairs to promote an integrated, student-centered experience.
  • Coordinates and strengthens external partnerships and collaborations that expand student support services, engagement opportunities, and campus-community alignment.
  • Oversees the development and execution of the division’s budgets, ensuring responsible stewardship of financial resources and alignment with institutional priorities.
  • Provides timely and effective leadership during student-related crises, managing sensitive situations with care, discretion, and a deep commitment to student wellbeing and institutional integrity.
  • Advises the Provost and university leadership on significant student-related developments, contributing to institutional policy, student conduct review, and strategic decision-making.
  • Leads the coordination and dissemination of key student-facing resources, including revisions of the Student Handbook and other policies, forms, and communications.
  • Fosters a collaborative and inclusive division culture where staff development, professional growth, and cross-functional teamwork are prioritized and championed.
  • Supervises the day-to-day functions of the unit.
  • Assumes other duties as assigned by the Provost.

Minimum Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • A Master’s Degree in Adult Education, counseling, higher education administration or related field and a minimum of five (5) years of administrative level experience in a two-year or four-year college/university, or student services setting.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to coordinate and perform multiple tasks.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work well with others.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from students and the general public.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Earned doctorate degree in an academic discipline, curriculum and instruction or higher education administration and five (5) years postsecondary experience at the executive level.
  • Experience at the four-year college/university level.
  • Experience at a Dean’s level.
  • Evidence of technology training and usage.
  • Demonstrate ability to increase first- and second-year student retention
  • Be able to lead innovative, high-quality and student-centered approaches to student success in curricular and co-curricular experiences
  • Embrace executive-level leadership, strategic planning, oversight, and coordination of student affairs departments
  • Possess knowledge of and be able to lead investigations in areas related to Title IX, Clery Act, Violence Against Women Act, Higher Education Act, and related federal laws and regulations
  • Communicate effectively with student leaders to promote positive student relations
  • Be comfortable with assessing and using data to drive decisions
  • Be a change-agent and skilled at leading through change
  • Understand the needs of first-generation college students
  • Ability to utilize conflict-resolution skills
  • Expertise in developing collaborative relationships with internal and external constituencies
  • Have effective team-building and team-management skills
  • Be self-directed, well-organized, detail-oriented and focused on results
  • Have the ability to work with and nurture a diverse workforce in a diverse community
