Empire State University is seeking an Assistant/Associate Professor of Addiction Studies in our School of Human Services. The successful candidate will have real-world practical experience in the field of addictions and will teach, develop curriculum, and mentor/advise students primarily in the Bachelor of Science in Addiction Studies program. Central to the faculty role is helping adults from diverse cultural backgrounds design and complete degrees that meet their individualized personal and professional goals. SUNY Empire faculty provide support to students in their overall academic program, including design of the degree and identifying opportunities for prior learning assessment.

A highly distributed organization, SUNY Empire makes extensive use of technological applications for communication, teaching and learning, and administrative purposes. Working in cooperation with local and statewide faculty and staff, the successful candidate will provide high-quality educational services to students, engage in an active scholarly agenda, participate in university governance, and enhance the university’s reputation within the community.

Responsibilities:

  • Developing and teaching online, hybrid, and independent study courses in Addiction Studies.
  • Mentoring and advising students as they develop degree programs.
  • Participating in curriculum development and academic assessment in the Department of Health and Human Services.
  • Participating in university service.
  • Developing and maintaining an active research agenda.

Job Requirements:
Required Qualifications:

  • An earned doctorate from a regionally accredited U.S. university or comparable non-U.S. university in one of the following areas: social work, social welfare, addiction psychology, mental health counseling, human services, or a related area.
  • College or university level teaching experience.
  • Experience with supporting diverse populations.
  • Ability to work in a distributed faculty environment.
  • Knowledge of New York State requirements and certifications within the field of addictions.
  • Demonstrated clinical experience in the field of addictions, including evidence-based treatment, medication-assisted treatment, and knowledge of current trends in the field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced/Master level Certified or Credentialed Addictions Counselor or Practitioner and a master’s degree in social work, addictions counseling, mental health counseling, or related human services discipline.
  • Experience with teaching and mentoring in online learning environments.
  • Experience with academic program development.
  • Relevant industry and/or field experience.
  • Experience with academic program development, innovative program delivery, and individualized programs.
  • Experience with learning technologies and online teaching.
  • Demonstrated record of scholarly achievement.
  • Bilingual and biliterate in Spanish and English.

Special Information:

  • Occasional travel will be required to fulfill university-wide commitments.
  • Office hours will vary to accommodate student needs.
  • Some evening and/or weekend engagement with students is required.
  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the U.S. on a full-time basis. VISA sponsorship is not available for this position.

Rank/Salary: Tenure-track, assistant/associate professor, appointment and salary to commensurate with experience and qualifications.
