The University of New
Mexico, College of Education and Human Sciences, Department of Special
Education, invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor position
Preparation in the undergraduate Dual License program in the area of Special Education
Teacher Preparation, with experience and expertise in preK-12 special education
classroom teaching. This new UNM main campus faculty member will work out of
the UNM-Gallup branch campus to extend the teaching, research, and service
mission of the Special Education Department to the area of Gallup, New Mexico
and surrounding communities.

Responsibilities

The successful
candidate will be expected to supervise students in field placements, advise students, and teach courses specific to the preparation
of special educators to serve the
diverse needs of students with disabilities in inclusive settings. The faculty
member will collaborate with colleagues in the Special Education Department and the Dual License Program
Coordinator to recruit and evaluate of potential cooperating teachers, place
teacher candidates in
field sites,
update program participants’ progress, and collaborate with our program
partners. We are especially interested in candidates who can contribute to
diversity through their teaching,
advisement, and service. Successful candidates must be committed to working
with broadly diverse student and community populations.

QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:
1. Terminal degree in Special Education or a closely related field by August 15, 2025
2. Minimum three years’ experience teaching students with a wide range of special education needs

Preferred Qualifications:
1. Robust and current formal academic preparation in the education of pre- and in-service educators to work with preK-12 students from historically marginalized communities in inclusive settings.
2. Thorough formal preparation and current involvement in research activities, such that the successful candidate will be able to establish an agenda of active research relevant to the preparation of pre- and in-service educators to work with preK-12 students from historically marginalized communities in inclusive settings.
3. Extensive preK-12 teaching experience working with students with a wide range of special education needs from historically marginalized communities in inclusive settings.
4. Excellence or potential for excellence in teaching undergraduate licensure courses.
5. Potential for excellence in supervision of teacher candidates, including those from historically marginalized communities.
6. Evidence of successful collaborations, especially with historically marginalized communities.
7. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
8. A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities.
