Job Summary:

The Department of Mathematics at Eastern Washington University (EWU) invites applications for a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor position to teach Mathematics Education to begin September 2026.

The College of Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (CSTEM) is one of the most exciting places to be a student at Eastern Washington University. Our students and faculty constantly work with innovating technology and ideas. CSTEM prepares students to succeed in elds such as Biology, Chemistry, Computer Programming, Data Science, Geoscience, Web Design and Computational Mathematics.

The Department of Mathematics offers a variety of degrees including Bachelors Degrees in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, Data Science and a Masters degree in Applied Mathematics.

The standard workload for this position is split as 80% teaching, 20% research and service. Teaching involves 36 credits per academic year as well as mentoring and advising students on academic research and academic success. Research involves maintaining a rigorous program of scholarly activity appropriate to the eld of mathematics education and in keeping with the Colleges and Departmental Unit Evaluation Plans. Service includes attending department and college meetings, as well as participating in various University committees at different levels.

All faculty are expected to actively participate in curriculum development, assessment of student learning and to engage in effective teaching including teaching practices and interactions with student with emphasis on student retention and a culture of belonging.

The expected salary upon hire for an Assistant Professor of Mathematics (Education) is $69,711. Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated potential for research related to K-12 mathematics education.
  • Earned doctorate in Mathematics Education or a closely related discipline
  • ABD candidates may be considered, but doctorate must be completed no later than three months following date of hire.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply a responsive and flexible approach that is supportive of the needs including universal access of our students, faculty, staff and the public.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Mathematics teaching at the K-12 level;
  • The use of technology to teach mathematics;
  • Inquiry-based mathematics teaching;
  • Experience mentoring or supervising student teachers;
  • Upper division mathematics;
  • Experience teaching mathematics courses or methods courses to preservice teachers;
  • Published research in mathematics education;
  • Integrating mathematics and science;
  • Knowledge of the Common Core State Mathematics Standards;

Other Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience with grant writing
  • Knowledgeable with learning management systems such as Canvas or Blackboard

Job Duties:
A Faculty Activity Plan will be developed by the end of the rst quarter of the selected candidates appointment and will consist of a combination of teaching, service and/or release time to perform duties, as negotiated and as needed to meet the business needs of the department.Additionally, all faculty are expected to:

  • Engage in effective teaching and assessment of student learning;
  • Meet all scheduled classes;
  • Plan, organize and inform students of the course content, texts, readings, assignments, attendance regulations and methods of evaluation including grading scales;
  • Schedule and attend office hours;
  • Turn in grades according to established deadlines;
  • Advise students who are declared majors on department, college and University requirements and career opportunities.

Conditions of Employment:

This position, during the course of university employment will be involved in the receipt of, or accountability for, university funds or other items of value; as well as the unsupervised access with developmentally disabled, vulnerable adults or children under the age of 16. The offer of employment is contingent upon successful completion and passing of a background check prior to beginning employment.
