POSITION TITLE

Assistant Professor of Art (Studio Art), the McCall School of Visual and Performing Arts, Coker University

POSITION SUMMARY

This is a full-time, tenure-track position with competitive salary and benefits beginning August 2026, reporting to the Director of the McCall School of Visual and Performing Arts. The Art Program is NASAD-accredited, offering a B.F.A in Studio Art and a B.A. in Art (with concentrations in Fine Art, Photography, Graphic Design, Animation, Illustration, and Art Education). The Art Program offers Studio Art courses in Drawing, Painting, Ceramics, Sculpture, and Mixed Media. Majors and minors are encouraged to explore multiple disciplines within the program, make interdisciplinary connections, and work in both traditional and digital media. The ideal candidate is proficient in traditional and contemporary approaches to artmaking and displays an ability to guide fine art students. Applicants must value interdisciplinary art programs, embody excellent interpersonal skills, and thoughtfully communicate with all students, faculty, and staff. This position requires curiosity and openness to a variety of perspectives; building connections with other programs; collaborating on course and program development; and implementing learning strategies that support student success regardless of one’s prior experience in art and design, or in higher education.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES

    • Teach introductory to advanced Studio Art courses for B.A. and B.F.A. undergraduate art students;
    • Teach art history, foundational courses and/or general education courses, as needed (determined by consultation with program coordinator);
    • Participate in curriculum planning, program assessment, and accreditation reporting;
    • Assist program coordinator in maintaining studio spaces and manage supplies/equipment needs of students;
    • Assist with recruiting and advising students;
    • Collaborate in a variety of activities with faculty in the Art Program, with other program faculty in the McCall School of Visual and Performing arts, and with faculty and staff across the University;
  • Opportunities to teach study away and study abroad courses are also available;
  • Commit to and contribute actively to Coker’s mission.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION

  • An earned M.F.A. in Studio Art or in a related discipline;
  • or an advanced degree in a related field with applicable experience.

EXPERIENCE

  • Teaching and/or possessing a professional background in 2D artmaking, interdisciplinary artmaking, and/or combination of 2D (e.g., painting and/or drawing) and 3D practices (e.g., ceramics and/or sculpture);
  • Active artistic practice and history of exhibitions/research;
  • Proficiency with tools and equipment necessary within a studio environment;

Preferred:

  • At least one year of teaching beyond the graduate school level;
  • Teaching all levels of undergraduate students, including majors and non-majors;
  • Teaching stacked studio courses.
