Job description

The Department of Finance and Banking in the College of Business Administration at Sam Houston State University (SHSU) invites applications for a tenure-track position in Finance at the Assistant Professor level to begin Fall 2026.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

Duties will include teaching, both face-to-face and on-line, undergraduate and graduate courses in finance, conducting research and publishing in scholarly journals, and providing services to the department, college, university, and appropriate national organizations. The teaching load is nine hours per long semester with additional summer teaching as a possibility. We seek individuals who are excellent teachers that can bring experience-based credibility to the classroom while also advancing the research reputation of the department and the college. Preferred candidates should be qualified as Scholarly Academic (SA) under AACSB standards (as defined by SHSU’s College of Business Administration) and will maintain that qualification. The salary and benefits package are competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications. To support faculty research, the college provides summer research funding for the first year of service.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. or D.B.A. with a specialization in finance or a closely related discipline from an AACSB-accredited institution. ABDs will be considered with an expected graduation date of Fall 2026.

DEPARTMENT AND COLLEGE INFORMATION 

The College of Business Administration, which has been accredited by the AACSB since 1995, employs about 90 full-time faculty members and serves over 3,000 undergraduate students and 300 graduate students. The Department of Finance and Banking includes twelve full-time faculty members, including ten tenured or tenure-track professors focused on delivering high-quality education and research in finance and banking. The department offers undergraduate degrees in Finance and in Banking and Financial Institutions with concentrations in investments, financial management, and financial planning. The department is responsible for managing the EMBA n Banking and Financial Institutions program through the efforts of the Smith-Hutson Endowed Chair of Banking. The Smith-Hutson Endowed Chair of Banking has a nearly thirty-year history of supporting and nurturing banking programs across the State of Texas. The department now also supports the Smith-Hutson Endowed Professor of Financial Investments, responsible for expanding our investments curriculum and managing the soon-to-be-opened Smith-Hutson Trading Floor.

Sam Houston State University (known as SHSU or Sam) was founded in 1879 and is the third oldest public institution of higher learning in the State of Texas. It is located 70 miles north of Houston in the hills, lakes, and forests region of East Texas in Huntsville. It is one of the oldest purpose-built institutions for the instruction of teachers west of the Mississippi River and the first such institution of its type in Texas. The school is named for one of Texas's founding fathers, Sam Houston, who made his home in the city.
