Minimum Qualifications
Qualifications for an Assistant Professor in English with expertise in North American Indigenous Literatures:

• Doctorate in English or closely related field, including Indigenous Studies (PhD in hand)
• A minimum of three years of teaching experience at the University level, which can include online instruction

Areas of Interest (No Minimum Level Required)

• Demonstrated ability to teach and develop courses in North American Indigenous Literatures, including our existing Studies in American Indian Literature course
• Demonstrable experience in pedagogies that support students of all backgrounds
• Active research and interest in the field of North American Indigenous Literatures. We welcome a secondary area of expertise in Multiethnic American Literatures

While our past course offerings have emphasized the literatures of nations and peoples traditionally residing within the borders of the contemporary United States, we welcome applicants with expertise in Indigenous literatures of any and all periods, genres, or regions across North America.

Description of the Department or Unit

The English department is home to multiple undergraduate programs including Creative Writing, Film, English Education, Literary Studies, and Rhetoric and Technical Writing. The English department also offers an M.A. program with concentrations in Literary Studies, Rhetoric and Composition, and Teaching Literature and Writing.

The English Department has offered classes on North American Indigenous Literatures in the major for the past 20 years. A growing number of students at the university identify as Native American, and there is an active Student American Indian Movement on campus. For the past ten years the Gadugi Partnership at App State has provided Indigenous studies programming on campus as well as a dual enrollment program for high school students among the Eastern Band of Cherokee in N.C.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
This position is a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track position, with a 3/3 teaching load and expectation of student advising. Faculty are expected to produce at least 2 peer-reviewed publications (or equivalent) every 3 years. Service expectations include committee work and related department activities.
Faculty member’s must be committed to excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching with the ability to teach introductory as well as major-specific and graduate courses. Pedagogies that support all students are highly encouraged.
