Parsons School of Design, a college of The New School, invites candidates for one-year fixed-term faculty of Photography at the rank of Assistant Professor, in the School of Art, Media and Technology.
We seek candidates with expertise in the practice, history, and theory of photography and related genres. We are particularly interested in candidates who bring critical and experimental perspectives on emerging photographic technologies, working in the realms of computation, data mapping, machine vision, and immersive and interactive environments. Candidates must have knowledge across contemporary approaches, concepts, techniques, and critical issues as they pertain to the range of practices that are associated with photography and related media.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The Assistant Professor may be expected to teach both undergraduate and graduate courses, and students from a variety of disciplines across Parsons and The New School. For a fixed term appointment, the teaching load is five courses, or their equivalent, per year across the programs and related elective courses.
Depending on background and experience, this faculty position may also include the possibility of a leadership role in the BFA Photography program as Program Director. Applicants with an interest in leadership should indicate this in their cover letter. Program Directorship roles at Parsons are accompanied by two course releases and a fixed annual stipend.
The faculty member will hold regular office hours, and participate in co-curricular activities on a regular basis, such as critiques, review panels and thesis supervision. They will contribute to the program community by way of committee assignments, project or end of year event coordination, and working groups, etc. within the program and school. They will be expected to coordinate areas of curriculum, and/or advise students. They may be called upon to represent the program for external events related to recruitment and admissions.
The faculty member will be an active member of school-wide, college and university committees as part of university citizenship. They will work with the school dean, associate dean, program directors, and the technical staff to implement support for curricula, policies, and facility designs that are responsive to and respectful of diverse users. The faculty member must actively contribute in maintaining an educationally diverse and creative community in all its activities and programs.
This faculty position is a one-year fixed term appointment (FTA) with no presumption of renewal. The terms and conditions of this faculty appointment are governed by The New School policies set forth in the The New School Full-Time Faculty Handbook. All hiring is subject to Provost budgetary approval.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- A graduate degree in photography (preferred) or a closely related discipline or equivalent experience.
- Active and current experimental/creative/critical scholarship focused on photography.
- A history of developing critical, historical, and theoretical discussions in the classroom/studio as they relate to design.
- Computer experience and knowledge of industry standard software.
- Two years teaching at college, university, community-based, and/or secondary education level with evidence of engagement with course and syllabus development/planning.
- Strong interest in working collaboratively across Parsons and the University, and have a record of working well with people from diverse cultural backgrounds, professional training, and aesthetic sensibilities.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team, as a collaborator or lead.
- Evidence of demonstrated interest in/building the ability to mentor and support students from diverse backgrounds, to develop and nurture the individual student’s abilities, and a strong commitment to progressive education. This evidence can be in a candidate’s teaching, research, scholarship, professional/creative practice, or other experience.
- Evidence of a commitment to diversity and inclusion (in classroom, campus, community) in teaching, research, scholarship, professional/creative practice, or other experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience teaching English language learners and students from underrepresented communities, and/or scholarship in diversity and inclusion.
- Scholarship that addresses diversity and inclusion.
- University teaching that includes a combination of core requirements, studios, seminars and tutorials, at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
WORK MODALITY
On-Campus Position: Faculty are expected to work on-campus due to the nature of the work in accordance with the University policies as set forth in the Full-Time Faculty Handbook.#LI-ONSITE
SALARY
Assistant: $75,000
