Job Description

Texas A&M International University (TAMIU), a member of the Texas A&M University System, welcomes applicants for an Assistant Professor of Physics to begin Fall 2026.

TAMIU is a Hispanic Serving Institution with over 8,000 students located in Laredo, Texas, a vibrant and bicultural city with a population of about 250,000. The university advances knowledge through research and discovery, teaching and learning, community engagement and public service, and with an intentional focus on student success and research excellence. For more information, please visit https://www.tamiu.edu/.

These are tenure-track 9-month full-time positions. Primary duties will include teaching introductory and upper-level courses for students taking physics. A reduced teaching load is available to allow new hires to establish their research program at the university. Moreover, course buyouts are available tied to grant funding obtained by the faculty. Duties also include service to the department, college and university as needed. This position requires face-to-face interactions through a regular schedule of attendance on campus and in the workplace.

The Department of Mathematics and Physics offers BA, BS and MS degrees in Mathematics and BA with a major in Mathematics with grades 7-12 certification and minor degree programs in Applied Physics and Mathematics. The minor in Physics currently consists of 20 SCH, 12 of which must be at the advanced level.

Required Qualifications

The successful candidate must hold a doctorate in Physics, or a related field, such as Applied Physics, Space Physics, or Computational Physics with a specialization, particularly in Computational Physics or Astrophysics. ABDs will also be considered but must have earned a doctorate before appointment. We strongly encourage candidates with coursework in Applied Physics and Computational Physics as well as the ability to teach Astronomy courses for undergraduate students.

We strongly encourage candidates with a strong record of or potential for sustained publication in peer-reviewed journals; the potential for or prior experience with seeking and/or securing external grant funding; a strong desire to work with first-generation students; and the ability to teach in areas that complement or strengthen our undergraduate and graduate courses.

We offer competitive salaries and a benefits package including health insurance, retirement benefits, and life insurance. Additional pay is available for summer teaching. Financial support for professional development opportunities, such as attending academic conferences, is also provided. Moving expenses are covered in whole or in part by the university.
