Position Overview
The Department of Psychology at Shawnee State University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychology position beginning August 2025.
We seek a dedicated educator. Shawnee State University (SSU) is a small, student-centered public university committed to serving a diverse population, including a significant number of first-generation college students. We are located in Portsmouth, Ohio. This is a small community where individual faculty can make a meaningful impact both on campus and in the surrounding region.
Responsibilities
- Teaching: Instruct four undergraduate courses each fall and spring semester. Applicants should be able to teach a diverse array of courses. However, a hire should be particularly focused on teaching clinical offerings such as Abnormal Psychology, Counseling Psychology, etc.
- Curriculum Development: Maintain and enhance clinical components of the psychology curriculum.
- Student Mentorship: Provide mentorship and academic advising to undergraduate students. This includes supporting first-generation and underprivileged learners.
- Scholarly Engagement: Engage students in scholarship opportunities.
- Service: Participate actively in departmental, college, and university service activities.
- Internship: This position includes the expectation that the candidate will, eventually, assume coordination of the psychology internship (anticipated in 2028).

Shawnee State University is the regional state university for south-central Ohio located on the Ohio River in Portsmouth. SSU is a primarily undergraduate, four-year public university with limited graduate degree programs. Enrollment is approximately 3,200 students. Adjacent to Portsmouth is Shawnee State Forest, the largest of Ohio’s state forests at over 65,000 acres. Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Doctorate in clinical or counseling psychology. Alternatively, for ABD (All But Dissertation) candidates, a pathway to being awarded the doctorate within a year of the hire date.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Instruction Experience: Prior teaching experience at the college level.
- Program Coordination: Familiarity with, or interest in, coordinating internship programs.
- Teaching Commitment: Demonstrated dedication to undergraduate teaching and mentorship.
- Flexibility: Ability to teach a variety of psychology courses, including statistics, research methods, behavior problems in children, etc.
- Student Engagement: Interest in supporting first-generation college students and contributing to their academic success.
- Campus Involvement: Willingness to become an active member of the campus and/or local community.
