Responsibility / Duty

  • Strategic Initiatives (40%): The AVPAA ensures that the Office of Academic Affairs is generating and implementing the strategic vision of the University through:
    • Encouragement and facilitation of a culture of continuous improvement within colleges, departments, and programs;
    • Implementation and facilitation of the University’s strategic plan and the academic master plan, monitoring key performance indicators, working with deans and department heads;
    • Collaboration with Assessment and Institutional Research to monitor, interpret, and report on data and information pertinent to faculty, academic performance, and strategy;
    • Leading policy development, and evaluating existing policies and procedures at the university, college, and departmental levels to ensure the University Handbook is up-to-date and in compliance with state and federal regulations, national and regional accrediting bodies, and trends in higher education;
    • Ensuring compliance with SACSCOC principles related to academic affairs issues, the University as a whole, and substantive change procedures; review and maintenance of Faculty Credentials and Rosters to ensure compliance;
    • Assisting colleges, departments, and programs with accreditation processes;
    • Collaborate with the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs on initiatives to secure external funding through grant writing for focused campus initiatives;
    • Liaison with legislative and community bodies to educate and promote the public understanding of the academic needs of the University.

Responsibility / Duty

  • Academic Quality, Program and Curriculum Development (40%): The AVPAA ensures that the University provides quality academic programs through:
    • Working with deans and department heads to lead the five-year academic program review cycle, ensuring that recommendations emerging from such reviews, such as major program modification or program discontinuation, are implemented and assessed;
    • Working with the provost, deans, and department heads to facilitate the development of new academic programs that further the University’s strategic plan and academic master plan, and provide for the needs of the region and society in general;
    • Monitoring of academic course sections offered each semester, and communicating with the academic services center, colleges, and departments to create additional offerings when need is shown;
    • Oversight of the general education core through liaison with the coordinator;
    • Collaboration with the Director of Distance Education to ensure academic quality and availability of high-interest programs through Nicholls Online;
    • Collaboration with the Director of Ellender Memorial Library to ensure efficient use of space and resources;
    • Oversight of the Academic Affairs Integrity program on academic dishonesty, cheating and plagiarism;
    • Oversight of maintenance/changes to the University catalog;
    • Working with the Director of Student Success and Retention to generate and implement initiatives to increase retention and progression to degree completion.

Responsibility / Duty

  • Support for the Administration of Academic Operations (20%): The AVPAA provides primary support to the Provost for overall academic responsibilities and assists in ensuring that the academic affairs of the University are administered and managed effectively and efficiently through the performance of the following responsibilities:
    • Liaison with the Registrar for the development of the Academic Calendar;
    • Liaison with the Faculty Senate leadership and Student Government leadership to receive and communicate information impacting the academic affairs of the University;
    • Assurance of fairness in the application of appropriate procedures in cases of faculty grievances or other personnel issues through interpretation of the University Handbook;
    • Promotion of a positive image by: maintaining effective relationships for the Office of Academic Affairs by representing the Provost, as necessary, at various meetings and functions; effectively communicating matters of academic concern to University administrators, faculty, staff, and students; and leading or serving on select University committees and task forces.
    • Assurance that miscellaneous projects related to academic affairs are completed in the best interest of the University by accepting and accomplishing those tasks which are delegated by the Provost.
  • Accountable for ensuring that affirmative action, equal opportunity, and diversity are integrally tied to all actions and decisions in areas of responsibility.

Minimum Experience Required

Eligible for, or holds tenure within the discipline; eligible for, or holds rank of Associate Professor at a minimum; minimum three years of experience in an administrative position within academics including program coordinator, department head, etc.

Minimum Education Required

Terminal degree from a regionally accredited university in an academic field germane to the University.

The Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs (AVPAA), working with and reporting directly to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, provides leadership to university initiatives, programs, structures, and functions that directly impact the faculty and academics at Nicholls State University. Working collegially with the provost, president, deans, department heads, faculty association, assessment and institutional research, students, student groups, and other units across campus, the AVPAA works to strengthen and sustain the faculty and students, as well as ensure academic program integrity and growth.

Physical Demands

The AVPAA must be willing and able to work some evening and weekend hours beyond the traditional 8:00 to 4:30 workday for the conduct of University business and functions. Some travel is necessary for meetings, conferences, etc.
