JOB PURPOSE:
Developing and maintaining a team of committed and customer-service oriented fundraising professionals is vital to the University and the mission of Development and Alumni Relations (DAR). The Assistant Vice President, Development Strategy & Operations provides senior leadership across multiple departments including Administration, Advancement Services, Alumni Relations, Advancement Communications, Advancement Services, Alumni Relations, Annual Giving, Development Operations, Donor Relations and Stewardship, Prospect Development and University Events and Protocol.
SUPERVISORY AUTHORITY:
Supervise and oversee the activities and management of all fundraising operations, alumni and donor engagement, development communications, annual fundraising, and university special event units, as assigned.
NATURE AND SCOPE:
As a member of the senior leadership team within DAR, this position plays a crucial role in driving the strategic direction of the University’s fundraising efforts and in ensuring the smooth operation of development activities within the university community. The role works directly with senior leadership to frame DAR’s strategic direction.
Supervising multiple subunit managers, the AVP leads the development of systems that optimize the effective discovery, qualification, engagement and cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of philanthropic partnerships, alumni, and friends of Howard University, as well as all attendees at university special events. Teamwork and collaboration both within DAR and across the university are essential.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
The position collaborates with the Senior Vice President and AVP/COO to develop and execute comprehensive fundraising strategies aligned with university priorities and annual revenue targets to be determined each fiscal year, and to execute special event and community engagement strategies. The role oversees the day-to-day operations of multiple offices and ensures compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and ethical standards in fundraising activities, hiring practices, financial reporting, and event execution. The Sr. AVP, Development Strategy and Operations is required to manage complex budgeting, resource allocation, and performance tracking; to establish and maintain efficient processes for gift processing, acknowledgment, and donor stewardship and for ensuring quality prospect research and analysis identify individual (annual, major, principal and planned giving donors) and institutional (foundations and corporate) partners.
CORE COMPETENCIES:
- Proven success supervising complex fundraising and operations teams both annually and while in campaign;
- Demonstrated experience managing complex budgets, special projects, large teams and multiple work streams;
- Demonstrated leadership that exemplifies a culture of collaboration, accountability, and excellence;
- Familiarity with fundraising technologies and technology system implementation;
- Familiarity with human resources and change management;
- Ability to navigate internal processes and structures to advance relationships with campus partners;
- Ability to provide leadership, problem-solve, and guide to a team of development professionals, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and excellence;
- Ability to leverage technology to enhance fundraising efforts and use data to inform performance metrics; and
- Ability to exercise independent judgment and a high degree of discretion.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s degree required, with a focus on nonprofit management, business administration, or a related field.
- 10-12 years of relevant experience
- Minimum five (5) years in a management leadership role
- Superior written and verbal communication, interpersonal skills, and relationship building acumen.

Expected Pay Range: $218,181 – $240,000
