Description
The Dean of Students (DOS) is responsible for the effectiveness of the student engagement, housing, wellness, conduct and safety functions of the College. In consultation with the Vice President for Student Affairs (VPSA), implements continuous improvement strategies that support an integrated approach to providing a safe, supportive, equitable, and enriching educational environment for students. The DOS partners with and assists the VPSA by providing leadership and collaboration for the following Student Services departments: Campus Security, Intercollegiate Athletics, Student Life, and the Wellness Center. The DOS duties also include managing the student code of conduct, serving as a member of the Title IX team, and chairing the CC Care Team.
Essential Duties
Leadership & Supervision
- Collaborate with program directors and/or other direct reports in planning, implementing, evaluating and coordinating the student engagement, wellness, conduct and safety areas of the College, including Student Life, the Wellness Center, and Campus Security.
- Directly supervise Student Life and Campus Security Departments, including supervision of staff, program and budgetary oversight, and oversight of operations and policies for student housing, campus dining, campus security, student activities and engagement, intramural sports and recreation, student government, and the student union.
- Serve in the place of the Vice President for Student Affairs during his or her absence as requested.
- Responsible for creating and maintaining a safe, healthy and supportive environment and culture that synthesizes the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of students in a holistic way.
Student Conduct, Care Team & Compliance
- Chair the CC Care Team, an interdisciplinary team designed to provide threat assessment, behavioral intervention, and support for students and employees of concern. Coordinate timely follow up with students of concern.
- Coordinate student conduct, including oversight of the student code of conduct, training student conduct hearing and appeal officers, conducting student conduct and appeal hearings, implementing disciplinary sanctions, and maintaining disciplinary records.
- Serve as a member of the Title IX team for the College, ensuring compliance with Title IX-related regulations, federal laws, and institutional policies.
- Collaborate with College leadership and unit directors to develop and implement campus policies and ensure compliance with state and federal laws, including the Clery Act, Drug Free Schools Act, Title VII, Title IX, Violence Against Women Act, Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and others.
- Plan and implement a crisis response plan for student-related crises, and oversee implementation and training with key campus stakeholders.
Student Housing
- Oversee on-campus housing, including management of campus housing eligibility, residence hall contracts and apartment leases, occupancy management software, student contract release procedures, summer conference operations, maintenance and custodial operations, and housing-related budgets and finances.
- Collaborate with the VP of Administrative Services (VPAS) to set housing and board rates for campus housing facilities, including forecasting for future occupancy and setting revenue targets.
- Collaborate with the VPAS to manage the campus dining contract, ensuring the campus dining vendor meets the ongoing needs of students, employees, and campus visitors.
- Develop and implement co-curricular educational initiatives for on-campus housing students, including oversight of the Resident Assistant and Residence Hall Tutor programs, living-learning communities, and other academic-related initiatives.
- Supervise residence life and student housing staff (full-time and student staff) and oversee the selection and training of all staff.
- Serve in an on-call rotation, providing after-hours crisis support to the Student Life and Campus Security areas of campus. This position is expected to be reasonably available for after-hours crises, regardless of whether they are specifically serving as the on-call person.
Student Leadership & Engagement
- Develop and implement robust portfolio of student engagement options for both on- and off-campus students, including student activities, housing activities, student government, student clubs and organizations, co-curricular learning opportunities, intramural sports, and general recreation.
- Work to establish a student culture where diversity is encouraged and where students learn to respect differences, take responsibility for their actions and exercise leadership.
Qualifications
Minimum:
- Master’s degree in student affairs administration or related field
- Five years of progressively responsible administration/management experience in a higher education setting, primarily in the area of student services; management experience including responsibilities for budgeting, supervision of professional and classified staff.
- Experience with Behavioral Intervention Teams (BITs), threat assessment, and interventions for students of concern.
- Experience with student conduct and serving as a conduct hearing officer.
- Experience in student housing, including occupancy management, supervision of residence life staff, and crisis response for on-campus residences.
- Must have a valid vehicle driver’s license and a good driving record that is insurable under the College’s liability insurance.
Desired:
- Experience with Title IX regulations, investigations, and grievance processes.
- Maxient student conduct database experience
- Community college work experience
- Knowledge of the NaBITA Risk Rubric
- Experience with crisis management and serving on-call
Supplemental Information
Work Environment:
Typical work environment is a classroom and office setting requiring normal safety precautions. Work is usually performed during the normal workday however, occasional early morning, late evening and weekend work may be required. This position is expected to serve on-call, necessitating occasional after-hours work. To serve in this capacity, employee is required to reside within 20 minutes of the College. Travel to work related events, conferences and other related duties will be required. Short periods of time will be spent outdoors traveling between campus buildings and between schools in various weather conditions.
Physical Demands:
Employee is regularly required to sit, speak, hear, use hands and fingers to handle materials and use computer, feel, and reach with hands and arms. Occasional lifting of up to 10 pounds may be required. Less frequent lifting of up to 50 pounds may be required (office supplies, paper boxes, etc.). Occasional work at off-site locations, outdoors, periods of walking and may require carrying materials or supplies.
Remote Work Eligibility:
Unless otherwise noted, all positions provide vital support to Casper College and require the successful candidate be available to work on location at the Casper College campus.
