The Position:

The Dean of the College of Chiropractic (CoC) is a high-impact leadership role with the opportunity to shape the future of Logan’s flagship program, one of the most respected chiropractic colleges in North America. Reporting to the Provost, the Dean oversees all academic and clinical operations, guiding nearly 100 faculty and 700+ Doctor of Chiropractic students through a tradition-rich, evidence-informed curriculum that includes more than 30 elective techniques – among the most offered by any chiropractic college – along with robust clinical training across Logan’s health centers and partner sites. This role calls for a collaborative and unifying leader who will build bridges across campus, strengthen student outcomes, and position Logan to remain competitive in a rapidly changing healthcare and higher education landscape. Responsibilities:

Leadership and Strategy:

  • Develop and implement strategic and operational plans for the College of Chiropractic, including clinic operations, that align with Logan University’s mission, vision, and strategic plan.
  • Provide visionary leadership and direction to faculty, staff, and administrators within the College of Chiropractic, CoC Clinic Operations, CoC Resident, and Fellow Education.
  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive culture that promotes academic excellence, innovation, and student success.

Academic Affairs:

  • Oversee the chiropractic education program’s development, delivery, continuous improvement and assessment to ensure high-quality academic standards and compliance with accreditation requirements.
  • Collaborate with faculty to promote curriculum development, research initiatives, and continuing education opportunities.
  • Ensure effective faculty recruitment, development, and evaluation processes.
  • Identify new program offerings for the College of Chiropractic.
  • In conjunction with the Dean of Health Sciences and others, provide leadership in the development and/or updating of faculty and staff job descriptions, professional development plans, and evaluation instruments that focus on enhancing student learning, continuous professional growth, scholarship, and support of the institution, and that recognize and reward success in these areas.
  • Support the division chairs in establishing their goals, objectives, assessment activities, and priorities in support of the strategic plan of the institution.
  • Participate in appropriate college and university ceremonies, programs, task forces, committees, accreditation and program development activities, etc.
  • Prepare reports on College activities as requested.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Provost.

Academic Success:

  • Coordinate with student services departments to support student retention, engagement, and success.
  • Promote a supportive and inclusive campus environment that addresses the diverse needs of the student body.

Administration and Operations:

  • Manage the budget and resources for the College of Chiropractic ensuring efficient and effective use of funds.
  • Oversee administrative functions, including policy development, compliance, and reporting.
  • Collaborate with other university leaders to ensure alignment and integration of academic across the institution.
  • Engage with the Office of Operational Excellence, Planning, and Learning to ensure successful implementation of strategies and plans that benefit the people and programs within the CoC.

External Relations:

  • Represent Logan University and the College of Chiropractic in professional organizations, accreditation bodies, professional licensure related to the CoC, and community engagements.

Qualifications:

  • Education: A terminal degree in chiropractic (DC) or a related field is required. An advanced degree in education, administration, or a related field is preferred.
  • Experience: A history of progressive leadership experience in chiropractic higher education.
  • Skills and Competencies:
    • Proven ability to develop and implement strategic plans.
    • Strong leadership, management, and organizational skills.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Knowledge of accreditation standards and higher education regulations.
    • Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

Leadership:

Garrett Thompson, DC, PhD

President

Dr. Thompson brings more than 20 years of experience in academic and strategic leadership to the role of President and has been recognized as one of the “Top 100 Leaders in Education.”

Dr. Thompson earned his bachelor’s degree in biology from Reed College and his PhD in biochemistry from Loma Linda University. While serving as an assistant professor at Southern California University of Health Sciences (SCUHS), Dr. Thompson graduated magna cum laude with his Doctor of Chiropractic degree. He was called back to academia and served as the department chair, and later, as the director of student learning outcomes at SCUHS.

In 2013, Dr. Thompson joined Sonoran University, where he has served in a variety of different roles, including Professor and Dean of Instruction, as well as his most recent position of Vice President of Academic Affairs and chief academic officer.

Over the course of his career, Dr. Thompson has volunteered with the Academy of Integrative Health and Medicine, the Council on Naturopathic Medical Education and the American Holistic Health Association. He most recently completed the Wharton Executive Education program for Executive Presence and Influence: Persuasive Leadership Development.

Throughout his career, Dr. Thompson has been recognized for classroom instruction, pre-clinical teaching and excellence in scholarship.

He has authored more than 40 research papers, studies and poster presentations and has presented on the topics of preparing for accreditation and cultivating excellence to nutritional therapies and enhancing provider self-care practices to achieve health behavior change in patients.

Jana Holwick, PhD

Provost and Chief Academic Officer

Dr. Holwick began her career in academia as chief financial officer and vice president of finance, later transitioning into academic leadership where she has spent the past 12 years working closely with faculty and administrators to advance student success and institutional growth. She has served in prominent leadership positions at institutions, such as Lake Erie College and Life University, bringing extensive expertise in institutional planning, resource development, program evaluation and higher education policy.

Dr. Holwick is a respected voice in accreditation and quality assurance, having served as an Academic Quality Improvement Program (AQIP) and Standard Pathway reviewer for the Higher Learning Commission. In addition, she has contributed as a peer reviewer and councilor for the Council on Chiropractic Education and the Southern Association of Colleges and Universities.

Dr. Holwick earned her PhD in Higher Education Leadership from Capella University, with a focus on enrollment management. She also holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in accounting from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and an associate’s degree from Cottey College.
