Job description

The University of South Carolina (USC) invites nominations, inquiries, and applications for the position of Dean, School of Medicine, Columbia. The university seeks an exceptional individual to provide leadership and direction for the school of medicine as it continues to expand its footprint on the Health Sciences Campus in Columbia, S.C.

USC’s School of Medicine Columbia serves the people of South Carolina and beyond through exemplary biomedical education, transformative research, and compassionate care for all. The School of Medicine has served the community for nearly 50 years and is the crown jewel intellectually, scientifically, and instructionally for the University of South Carolina, training future generations of physicians, health care professionals, and scientists, while supporting the growing health needs of South Carolinians. Educational programs at the School of Medicine take full advantage of the University of South Carolina’s status as the state’s only Tier 1 research (R1) institution. Students receive a leading-edge, exemplary medical education from a school where interdisciplinary research and quality patient care training help guide the next generation of health care professionals.

On February 25, 2025, the USC broke ground on a Health Sciences Campus that will redefine the future of health care education and research during a ceremony at the site of its new School of Medicine Columbia. This cutting-edge, 300,000-square-foot-plus medical education and research facility will be part of USC’s transformative $300+ million Health Sciences Campus, amid 16 acres in the city of Columbia’s reimagined BullStreet District.

USC is committed to improving access to cognitive care, particularly for individuals in underserved communities. The University is working to open the Brain Health Center in Columbia in early 2026. It will serve as a hub for delivering exceptional cognitive care through clinical innovation and research. The center will be powered by the latest technology and tools. The interior of the building will feature two MRI scanners, including an ultra-high field 7 Tesla scanner, the first of its kind in South Carolina. A wide-bore 3 Tesla scanner that is about twice as powerful as standard clinical MRI scanners will help provide brain imaging detailed enough to support the most complex diagnostic cases.

Reporting to the Executive Vice President and Provost, the dean serves as the chief academic and administrative officer of the School of Medicine (SOMC) and is a key member of USC’s academic leadership team. The dean is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the academic mission and for achieving the school’s strategic priorities, enabling the school to fulfill its mission into the future.

The ideal candidate for this role will provide strategic leadership to the medical school, enhance research, build and maintain partnerships, have experience in accreditation, and understand allied health programs and translational research. The individual will have an M.D., a strong research portfolio, the ability to secure tenure at the rank of full professor, and at least 7 years of progressive administrative experience. The incoming dean also has the possibility of a clinical appointment in the Prisma Health Center.
