Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), a comprehensive doctoral institution, and a member of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, invites applications for the Director of Clinical Training, an open rank, tenure-track faculty position in Psychology. The Psychology Department is housed within IUP’s College of Health Sciences. The College of Health Sciences is committed to bolstering the healthcare workforce in rural communities. Recently, IUP hosted the first regional rural health summit. The Director of Clinical Training will contribute to the success of the Clinical Psychology, PsyD program as it strengthens its emphasis on rural mental health through collaborative, interdisciplinary efforts, and external partnerships. Faculty within the PsyD program enjoy a blend of clinical supervision, teaching, research, and mentoring, while fostering a culturally diverse educational environment.
The Position: The Director of Clinical Training is a faculty member in the Department of Psychology, which is housed in the College of Health Sciences. The current department of 9 faculty offers a PsyD program in clinical psychology, which has been APA-accredited continuously since 1986. The Psychology Department values collaboration and an interdisciplinary approach to research and teaching. The department strives to create an inclusive environment that trains learners to work with clients of all ages, cultures, and ethnic backgrounds. The program, which follows a practitioner model of training with a strong commitment to science-based education, accepts approximately 15 graduate students each year. Comparisons with other university-based PsyD programs on measures of excellence (e.g., EPPP pass rates, internship placement rates, etc.) place IUP’s program among the top in the country. With the program’s national reputation and strong outcomes, graduates of the PsyD program often find themselves advancing to leadership roles in the field. The department also houses the Center for Applied Psychology, a clinical services facility, which provides opportunities for clinical training and research in therapy and assessment. At the undergraduate level, the department offers a rigorous bachelor’s degree program, with approximately 350 students, that includes an honors program and faculty-supervised research opportunities. Collaboration within the College of Health Sciences, as well as with the proposed College of Osteopathic Medicine, offers rich academic and clinical possibilities. The Department of Psychology also supports the University’s broader goal of building a diverse and inclusive workforce capable of delivering affordable, high-quality health care for rural communities in Pennsylvania. The Institution: Since opening its doors in 1875, Indiana University of Pennsylvania has used innovative programs and hands-on learning opportunities to transform student lives and positively impact the world. Location: Indiana, Pennsylvania, located in the bucolic foothills of the Allegheny Mountains and one hour northeast of Pittsburgh, is home to approximately 13,000 residents. The ideal candidate will demonstrate potential to lead the Clinical Psychology, PsyD program in strengthening its emphasis on rural mental health. The successful candidate will demonstrate evidence of, or potential for, effective teaching strategies, mentorship, and engagement in curriculum development at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, experience in or a strong commitment to supervising doctoral students’ clinical training through hands-on guidance, assessment, and feedback. Additionally, the candidate will be expected to maintain an active research agenda, involving but not limited to, supporting clinical psychology students in dissertation/doctoral project development and completion. Key leadership characteristics will include compassion, empathy, and humanity; a collaborative mindset; a strong commitment to service; and the ability to understand the needs of students and faculty. The next Clinical Director should be able to formulate meaningful relationships on campus and within the broader off-campus community.
Position Qualifications
Required:
- The Clinical Director will possess a doctorate from an APA-accredited clinical, counseling or school psychology program, and must become licensed in Pennsylvania within one year of beginning work.
Essential Functions
Academic faculty must have, and maintain the physical and mental abilities, communicative skills, and stamina necessary to carry out the essential functions of their positions in teaching, research, scholarship, and service. Work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve standing to a significant degree, walking for brief periods of time and may include driving requirements.Faculty must be able to:
- Teach courses assigned by the departmental chair on a schedule made of a combination of standard class-meeting times as determined to meet instructional needs and adhere to the requirements of the department’s curriculum.
- Teach courses for a mandated number of contact hours per week over a full semester and meet university expectations for final exams.
- Present course material in a clear and organized manner using methodologies appropriate to the discipline.
- Evaluate student work fairly and promptly.
- Perform the physical requirements of laboratory, field work, studio work, or other activities outside typical classroom instruction if applicable.
- Maintain current knowledge of the discipline through continued scholarly activity and research.
- Participate actively in assignments necessary to advance the service and/or outreach of the department, college, and university.
