Definition of Classification:

Reporting to the Associate Provost for Faculty & Senior International Officer, this position oversees all aspects of undergraduate and graduate global education, currently decentralized across the College and Schools. Key responsibilities include sustaining a University-wide culture of best practices in international education; advocating for study away as a high-impact practice; expanding access and advancing diversity, equity and inclusivity in relation to global education; cultivating and evaluating external program providers; advising students into program selection and managing the application process; risk management; managing processes related to exchange students; and building support structures to enhance the experience of international and exchange students. Among the University’s global education opportunities are exchanges (both with institutions within the United States and abroad), direct enrollment partnerships, third-party providers, and short-term, faculty-led travel courses.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Serving as the University’s lead on cultivating and evaluating exchange institutions, direct enrollment partners, and third-party providers.
    • Note: The University has partnerships with six external providers: CET, CIEE, DIS, IES, SIT, SFS; several international exchange programs (e.g., Chinese University of Hong Kong, Waseda, Nanzan and Reitaku Universities (Japan), Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, University of East Anglia and University of Galway) and one domestic exchange program (Tuskegee University) all of which are managed by the Director.
  • Leading all necessary processes relating to the above programs, e.g. issuing and updating contracts, MOUs, exchange agreements.
  • Expanding opportunities for University-wide educational programs at our international campus in Salzburg, Austria in collaboration with the Associate Provost and Deans.
  • Expanding opportunities for study-away and international student support programs on the Los Angeles campus, in collaboration with the Associate Provost and Deans.
  • Managing faculty travel courses by advising faculty on budget preparation, travel itineraries, risk management, and recruitment.
  • Supervising the Office of Global Education staff, graduate interns, and student workers.
  • Managing the finances and budgets for all University of Redlands study away programs.
  • Evaluating budget model for the University’s study away programs and working toward centralization of those budgets within OGE together with the Associate Provost.
  • Representing the Office of Global Education at information sessions, travel fairs, prospective student visit days, new student orientations, and professional meetings.

Advancing Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging & Student Success in Global Education

  • Collaborating with University administrators and faculty on global education as a strategic priority for student success, cultural competency and campus diversity/inclusivity.
  • Administering both internal and external grants and scholarships for undergraduate study abroad (Gilman, Fund for Education Abroad and Freeman Asia) and pursuing new sources of funding.
  • Representing global education in ongoing retention and student success efforts, together with the Associate Provost.
  • Supporting first-generation and BIPOC students in pursuing study-away opportunities through initiatives such as the Study Away Ambassadors program
  • Collaborate with enrollment and student success teams in the Schools to expand and enhance DEIB efforts related to global education in those units.
  • Planning, coordination and assessment of programs and events to foster international student belonging, development, and retention together with the Assistant Director of International Student & Scholar Success and collaborating across the institution to create additional engagement opportunities.

Assessment of Program Quality and Student Learning

  • Leading processes related to assessing program quality, conducting periodic site visits, administering student program evaluations, and discontinuing programs based on assessment.
  • Collaborating with Study Away Advisory, academic units and shared governance on assessment of student learning related to global learning;

Enrollment Management and Student Advising

  • Executing international student orientation and managing pre-arrival communication with international students together with OGE team.
  • Maintaining Terra Dotta online platform for program listing and searchability, ensuring ease of student interface and tracking enrollments across programs.
  • Managing enrollment distribution across program type to align with budget constraints, in tandem with Study Away Advisory faculty.
  • Meeting with current and prospective students to provide tailored study away information meeting their educational goals.
  • Conducting general information, orientation, pre-departure, and re-entry sessions for students.
  • Communicating administrative and risk management policies, procedures, and deadlines involving study away.
  • Leading the Office of Global Education in providing support, community, and advocacy institution-wide on behalf of international students and scholars.
  • Coordinating visas with the Austrian Consulate for the Salzburg campus.

Student & Exchange Visitors Program (Department of State) Compliance

  • Serving as Responsible Officer for the Department of State and supervising all Alternate Responsible Officers (ensuring ongoing training and best practices related to “J” visas).
  • Staying current on changing regulations and federal policies affecting international student and scholar services.
  • Supervising all processes and authorizations for J-1 students, including issuing DS-2019s, travel signatures, and other immigration documents.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory

  • Supervises and monitors performance of the Office of Global Education team and assesses outcomes, hiring, recruitment, and discipline per policy.
  • Oversees three direct reports:
    • Associate Director of International Student and Scholar Success, DSO
    • Program Coordinator and Global Education Advisor, ARO
    • Senior International Student Advisor, DSO, Los Angeles campus

Qualification Guidelines

Experience/Training/Education:

Required

  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution, or equivalent combination of education and training that provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Substantial experience in an international office advising F-1; J-1 students; and M1.
  • Experience developing and managing complex budgets, using Excel, and ensuring fiscally sound expense approval and management processes.
  • Commitment to excellence in service while working with individuals from diverse cultures and various constituencies.
  • Strong intercultural communication skills, cultural understanding, and diversity appreciation.
  • Dedication to professional development and commitment to global learning.
  • Strong communication (spoken, written, and presentation), advising, organizational leadership, and teamworking skills.
  • Ability to organize and manage multiple tasks and responsibilities.
  • Proficiency in use of education abroad and team/office management relevant computer software applications.
  • Knowledge of and experience in international affairs, education, or studies.
  • Knowledge of current international events and issues.
  • Understanding of the field of global education (curriculum integration, crisis management, risk mitigation, experiential learning, student recruitment, etc.)
  • Ability to understand and apply assessment in program evaluation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous work experience in an Education Abroad or international office setting.
  • Experience teaching globally relevant topics in a higher education academic setting.
  • Experience living, studying, or traveling abroad.
  • Proficiency in English and at least one other language.
  • Experience with higher education administration, budgets, financial procedures, policy development, and strategic planning.
  • Familiarity with university admissions procedures, international admissions, financial aid, academic advising, risk mitigation, student duty of care, and international travel risk management.
  • Familiarity with visa and immigration issues for domestic and international students.
  • Familiarity with US and international educational systems.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Communicate effectively and follow instructions, both verbally and in writing.
  • Aptitude to learn new and evolving technology and recommend ways to improve position’s efficiency.
  • Excellent technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:

Working Conditions:

Standard office and field setting. Duties performed are primarily in an office environment while sitting at a desk or computer workstation or in meetings. At least minimal environmental controls to assure health and comfort. This position requires flexibility for evening and weekend work and occasional travel.

Physical Demands:

Incumbents regularly sit for long periods; walk short distances on a regular basis; may travel to various locations to attend meetings and conduct work; use hands and fingers to operate an electronic keyboard or other office machines; reach with hands and arms; stoop or kneel or crouch to file; speak clearly and distinctly to answer telephones and to provide information; see to read fine print and operate computer; hear and understand voices over telephone and in person; and lift, carry and/or move objects weighing up to 20 pounds.

HIRING RANGE: Anticipated hiring range is near or at the minimum of the classification, commensurate with candidate’s education, experience, skills, and training. The University of Redlands is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range considers the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is defined as the Full Pay Range. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is defined as the Hiring Range. Placement within the Hiring Range is determined by internal equity, and relevant qualifications.

PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL EXAMS: For certain positions typically in Public Safety, Facilities, Athletics and Information Technology Services departments, employment is contingent upon a candidate passing a pre-employment physical exam with the ability to lift in excess of 50 lbs. Public Safety Officers, in addition to a pre-employment physical exam, will also be required to pass a psychological evaluation.
