The Director of Library Services at Hutchins Library leads the library and educational technology staffs to provide high quality library and educational technology support and services. This role provides leadership and guidance for a suite of services including: information literacy instruction programs, Archives and Special Collections, affordability and open educational resources, circulation, course reserves and copyright guidance to the instructional community. This faculty position requires a strong commitment to public services coupled with a vision for using emerging technologies and evidence-based decision practices to develop, implement, and assess services. The Director is responsible for planning, implementing, and assessing library services; hiring, developing, and evaluating library staff; developing and monitoring library budgets; evaluating and maintaining electronic resources; serving as an advocate for library programs. The Director also mentors and evaluates the Director of Educational Technology.

  • Leads the Library’s development of emerging technologies and evidence-based decision practices to develop, implement, and assess services
  • Leads and supervises full-time employees, including hiring, onboarding, training, determining workloads, delegating responsibilities, providing direction, coaching, mentoring, and monitoring and evaluating job performance
  • Provides strategic oversight of library services including: research instruction, Archives and Special Collections, circulation, acquisition, and outreach
  • Collaborates with faculty librarians and staff and student employees to maintain a high level of service
  • Reviews and updates documentation and onboards new staff
  • Captures, analyzes, and assesses transactional and performance data from those systems to determine trends and develop strategies to improve the library experience for students, faculty, and staff
  • Oversees the Library’s open resource program
  • Analyzes and manages workflows and processes to improve delivery, speed, effectiveness, and accuracy of resource sharing, including working with consortium partners to ensure effective operations with courier services, etc
  • Liaises with campus partners who are located in the library
  • Collaborates with administration and Public Safety to ensure optimal functioning of the physical building from a user-centric focus and to manage emergency situations
  • Work with the library faculty and staff to develop, implement, coordinate, and provide quality library service
  • Promote development of library services and library staff.
  • Serve as library advocate.
  • Serve as member of library faculty (provide library instruction, reference desk coverage, collection development liaison).
  • Coordinate review, renewal, and management of print and electronic subscriptions and services.
  • Service as liaison with library consortiums (BCLA, AIKCU, FoKAL, SOLINET, Oberlin Group).
  • Work with the LMS/Projects Coordinator to Develop Education technology services and support.

Other roles/duties will be assigned as necessary to assist the College in the attainment of the goals set forth and the enhancement of a positive, respectful learning environment for all staff, faculty and students.

What You’ll Bring:
Education required to ensure success in this position:

  • Master’s Degree from an ALA accredited library or information science program.

Experience required to ensure success in this position:

  • Minimum of 5 years experience in an academic, public, or comparable library environment.
  • Demonstrated success in supervision and leadership

Special skills, knowledge and abilities:

  • Customer service skills and commitment
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work with a diverse clientele of students, faculty, library colleagues and visitors
  • Demonstrated knowledge of all aspects of library operations
  • Demonstrated knowledge of appropriate technologies
  • Demonstrated knowledge of library administrative practices
  • Ability to work in a team-based environment

License, certification, or registration necessary:

  • Required background check

Physical requirements:

  • Ability to sit, stand, walk for extended periods as needed, communicate, reach and manipulate objects, tools or controls
  • Ability to navigate campus and public buildings/grounds
  • Ability to travel by car and/or plane

Environmental conditions:

  • Standard library and office environment.
  • Extensive computer use
  • Professional office environment with interruptions and noise due to frequent visitors, students, staff and faculty
