Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

The primary purpose of the Office of Military & Veterans Affairs is to oversee the recruitment, admission process and support for University veterans, guardsmen, reservists and their dependents and assist them in utilizing their educational benefit to complete a program of study. The Office of Military & Veterans Affairs manages all veteran support services and events for the campus and serves as a source of veteran administration expertise.

Description of Work

The Director of the Office of Military & Veterans Affairs is responsible for the development and coordination of a comprehensive program of support services for veteran, military and dependent students at the University. The Director serves as the principle advocate for student veterans, military and dependents as well as ensures the quality of policies, programs activities and services designed to enhance their educational experiences. The Director also serves as the University’s liaison with outside agencies and offices, at the state and federal levels, whose work impacts the lives of veterans, military and their family members.

Competencies/Knowledge Skills, and Abilities Required in this Position

Possess a working knowledge of the practices, procedures and activities related to all veteran benefits programs. Ability to direct, manage and implement all aspects of the veteran benefits programs. Possess a working knowledge of undergraduate and graduate degree program requirements, institutional academic policies, and veterans’ education benefits programs. Possess the ability to present clear, concise information, both orally and in writing. Possess the ability to establish professional and cooperative working relationships with various University offices, students, parents, community colleges, government agencies, and the general public. Possess the ability to establish and maintain quality, trusting relationships with students who have experienced possible traumatic events. Possess excellent problem solving and organizational skills.

Minimum Training and Experience

Possess a Master’s degree with at least two years of experience working with service members or military service as an Officer and/or Senior Enlisted veteran or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
