Job description

The Executive Vice President & Provost will, in conjunction with and at the direction of the president, lead Loyola Marymount University toward the fulfillment of its mission – the encouragement of learning, the education of the whole person, the service of faith and the promotion of justice.

Reporting to the president, the provost is responsible for the academic aspects of the university: strategic planning and setting of academic values, policies, and practices; guidance and evaluation of deans and other key academic leaders; budget oversight and chair of the university’s budget committee; oversight of faculty recruitment, retention, special hires, tenure and promotion decisions; fostering globalization and higher education partnerships and alliances ; and provides oversight to the conduct of research and scholarship, and works to stimulate a high level of scholarly productivity. The deans of all colleges and schools will report directly to the provost. Like the president, the provost serves as an institutional role model by demonstrating integrity and a keen understanding of higher education.

The provost will work closely with the faculty, staff and institutional partners to direct activities in support of academic success; steward student learning outcomes and ongoing assessment; and foster excellence in scholarship, teaching and service. The provost will be actively engaged in the recruitment, retention and professional development of the university’s talent and foster an inclusive environment that supports students, faculty and staff endeavors.

Serve as chief executive officer in the absence of the president and/or as instructed.

Direct all functions of the university in conformity with board of trustees and presidential direction, university policy, federal, state and local law and regulations.

Provide leadership in support of the academic enterprise, as well as support for the pursuit of excellence in each college/school and advancement of university vision. Foster innovation in pedagogy, curriculum design, and use of technology to enhance learning outcomes, increase access, and strengthen LMU’s competitive position.

Provide leadership to the conduct of admissions, financial aid, and career development for students. Responsible for the oversight of the quality and practices associated with undergraduate, graduate, and professional study at the university. The provost oversees the administrative practices associated with enrollment, course offerings, tuition, student fees, and the policies and values which guide these endeavors.

Champion Ignatian pedagogical principles and Marymount values, ensuring that academic programming, faculty development, and student engagement reflect the charisms of the university’s three sponsoring religious orders, especially through the promotion of justice, service, and ethical discernment.

Formulate a compelling vision for the university’s academic future and provide leadership in refining the university’s goals and strategic plan through evidence-based academic planning, demographic forecasting, labor market analysis, and program assessment to anticipate emerging trends and ensure institutional resilience.

Manage complex, institutional challenges by effective facilitation and mediation when required. Demonstrate capacity for crisis leadership, including institutional continuity planning, public health response, emergency communications, and ethical decision-making in volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous environments.

Support each college/school, including but not limited to, working with:

  • Academic leaders to support activities that align and move forward the University’s strategic vision and mission.
  • EVP & Chief Operating Officer their teams to ensure financial and operational services are strategically aligned.
  • Student affairs to support activities that align and move forward the University’s strategic vision and mission.
  • Mission and Ministry to integrate mission-driven priorities into curriculum and faculty development.
  • All individuals to advance inclusive excellence across academic units, and embed equity and inclusion principles into academic policy, programs, and pedagogy
  • University Advancement to identify fundraising priorities and align academic planning with philanthropic goals and alumni engagement strategies.
  • Marketing, Communications, and External Relations to promote academic strengths and thought leadership, and to ensure academic achievements and initiatives are effectively communicated to internal and external audiences.
  • LMU Athletics to promote alignment between academic standards and athletic programs, and to support student-athlete success through coordinated academic and advising services.
  • University General Counsel to ensure academic policies and initiatives comply with legal and regulatory frameworks and to collaborate on sensitive or high-impact institutional issues requiring legal insight.

Ensure successful institutional and specialized accreditation efforts, compliance with federal and state regulations, and the continuous improvement of academic quality through robust assessment and review processes.

Guide a thoughtful and intentional budget process that supports the university’s strategic goals and ensures sound allocation of resources.

Ensure the university’s commitment to interculturalism, as evidenced by creative and effective initiatives to attract and retain talented students, faculty, and staff; programming that model’s inclusiveness; policy & procedure; and community involvement both within and outside of the university.

Provide leadership to the university community and beyond: students, faculty, staff, donors, board members, and community at large. Uphold the principles of shared governance and maintain strong, transparent, and collaborative relationships with faculty senate and governance bodies to ensure inclusive academic decision-making that align with university goals.

Foster an environment of collegiality, support, and mutual trust.

Support the leadership team by hiring for mission, providing timely and direct feedback, creating opportunities for personal and professional development/ growth, providing incentives for high performance, and ensuring success.

Represent LMU’s academic interests and excellence in regional, national, and international forums and associations.

Compliance Expectations

Lead the University with respect to all federal, state, and local compliance standards including but not limited to: Title VI and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964; Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973; Higher Education Act of 2008 (HEOA); Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA); Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP); Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC); the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act); and NCAA, Conference, and conduct all aspects of the University’s athletic programs in accordance with the rules and policies established by the university, the athletics department, all sports conference affiliations, and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

Requisite Qualifications

This position requires a combination of skills, education and experience to perform the responsibilities described, with a minimum of the following:

  • A Ph.D., M.D., or J.D. with progressively responsible experience in educational administration and leadership
  • Tenured, full professorship evidenced by a record of excellent academic achievement
  • Experience with programmatic development at a dean, equivalent, or higher level
  • Ability to articulate the university’s traditions, values, and perspectives
  • Demonstrated success in leading diverse work groups with complex challenges and opportunities
  • Proven ability to manage a variety of operations with varied facilities, motivate and develop staff to potential, develop budgets, and design and manage efficient business processes
  • Demonstrated ability to provide effective long term vision and leadership in a changing higher education environment
  • Ability to maintain productive relationships with all segments of education, the community, and appropriate governmental entities
  • Exemplary communication skills (both written and oral) evidenced by background in preparing comprehensive reports and executive summaries incorporating business trends, industry trends, student/faculty/staff satisfaction, and other key matrices

We are offering a salary range of $405 to $583, which may adjust based on requisite qualifications.
