Reporting to the Department Head of Humanities, Arts, and Interdisciplinary Studies, History Faculty are responsible
for teaching a variety of introductory and upper-level undergraduate History courses. Courses include World
Civilization, African American History, North Carolina History, Environmentalism, United States History, and other
Special Topics. Teaching flexibility is highly desired.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Teaching all levels of undergraduate History Courses. Full-time teaching load is up to 15 credit hours per semester; may have release time to conduct research or other duties.
  • Ability to use technology in the classroom as well as the ability to teach online courses as needed.
  • Effectively advises students through matriculation, including sharing academic and student resource information (when applicable).
  • Effectively managing the classroom environment.
  • Developing, maintaining, and submitting accurate, timely, and complete records (attendance, assignments, grades, end-of-course reports, etc.).
  • Participating in the course and curriculum development.
  • Managing and supervising student-interns (when applicable).
  • Serving the School, the University, and the profession and community as appropriate, including attending required faculty and department meetings. (Not Required for Adjuncts)
  • Complete yearly Professional Development courses as defined by the school. (Not Required for Adjuncts)
  • Mentoring part-time faculty and students, as well as providing service to the School and the University as assigned. (Not required for Adjuncts)
  • As applicable to assignment as an academic Program Coordinator:

o Regularly organizes, schedules, and documents collaboration meetings with other program colleagues to:

  • Discusses matters related to the students in the applicable program.
  • Assesses and reviews the needs of the program (faculty, supplies, instrumentation, etc.).
  • Makes program curriculum revision recommendations aimed to address current market trends and submits them to the Department Head.
  • Coordinates activities with colleagues to enhance teaching and the learning process.
  • Acts as the primary faculty academic advisor for the students in the program.
  • Disseminates information to students relating to internships and job opportunities, research, seminars, graduate schools, supporting programs, tutoring, etc.
  • Composes an annual strategic plan and an annual operational plan for the applicable academic program.
  • Submits an annual assessment report.
  • Serves as an advisor for Freshman Orientation summer programs (when applicable).
  • Assures submission of book orders for all relevant program courses.
  • Program Coordinators receive a three-credit reduction in their teaching load per semester.

Job Qualifications
Required Education and/or Experience

  • Earned Master’s Degree in History or a Ph.D. in History or related field (with at least 18 credit hours of History-related classes). Degrees must be from an accredited institution of higher learning.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Teaching experience at the university level preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding and a strong commitment to cultural diversity.
  • Experience with publishing and/or presenting research preferred.

Certificates, Licenses, or Registrations

Must possess the minimum credential standards of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), which normally includes at least 18 graduate semester credit hours in the subject area or suitable approved justifications.

Physical Demands
Ability to sit or stand for up to 8 hours/day. Some lifting (up to 25 pounds occasionally), bending, and carrying. Specific vision abilities include the ability to use close vision. The employee is regularly required to talk and hear, and to use hands and fingers to handle or feel.
