The successful candidate will teach a maximum of 13.5 credits per semester (fall/spring), which may include day, evening, and weekend off-campus or distance education coursesThis position may also include prison education at any of our three prison locations to include Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women, Dillwyn Correction Center, and Buckingham Correctional Center.

Position Description – Full-Time, 9-month Faculty- Microbiology/General Biology

Position Purpose: The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching microbiology and general biology courses, fostering student engagement, and contributing to the college’s academic mission. The faculty member will support student learning through innovative instructional strategies, curriculum development, and participation in college initiatives.

Position Title: Microbiology/General Biology Faculty

Department: Health and Life Sciences

Employment type: Full-time (9 months) Faculty

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Teach microbiology and general biology courses using a student-centered approach, including lectures and laboratory sessions.
  • Develop and update curriculum, ensuring alignment with current scientific research and best practices in biological sciences.
  • Utilize various instructional methods, including technology-enhanced learning, to accommodate diverse student needs.
  • Assess student learning outcomes and provide timely feedback to promote student success.
  • Maintain office hours and advise students regarding academic and career pathways.
  • Engage in professional development and stay current in the field of microbiology and general biology.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, college committees, and community outreach activities.
  • Support the college’s mission of diversity, equity, and inclusion through instructional practices and engagement with students from diverse backgrounds.

Special AssignmentsMay be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA’s/Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in microbiology or general biology with at least 18 graduate semester hours in microbiology.
  • Minimum of two years of occupational experience
  • Strong oral and written communication skills

Additional Considerations

  • A doctorate in microbiology, general biology, or a closely related field.
  • Experience with online or hybrid teaching formats.
  • Experience teaching in higher education, especially within a community college
  • Experience advising and mentoring students
  • Familiarity with curriculum development and assessment strategies.
  • Ability to integrate active learning strategies and hands-on laboratory experiences into instruction.
  • Experience working with a diverse student population
