THE DEPARTMENT

The Biology Program provides a strong background in the biological sciences for students transferring to four-year institutions and are interested in careers such as health, agriculture, research, and teaching. Our core program includes prerequisite courses for nursing and other allied health programs. The biology faculty work collaboratively with their science colleagues in the Hartnell Science, Technology, Engineering and Math area, which have been awarded multiple STEM grants, including Title V, NSF, Department of Education, and NASA grants.

THE POSITION

Under the general direction of the area dean or appropriate administrator, the selected candidate will primarily teach microbiology courses, and will teach other biology classes as needed. The assignment may include teaching at any of the college’s campus sites in the day, evening, or weekend as well as distance learning courses.

This position is expected to teach in-person classes at Hartnell College’s main campus in Salinas and other centers. Teaching assignments may also include online classes.

Examples of Duties

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

  • Coordinate, plan, organize, and instruct lecture and lab courses as assigned;
  • Coordinate, plan, prepare, present, evaluate, and deliver classroom instruction and related activities, including developing and revising curriculum; using computer and advanced technologies in instruction; and maintaining currency in the field;
  • Offer student advising and assistance;
  • Assist in the growth and success of a diverse population of students through careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methodologies, and informed critical feedback on assignments and discussion;
  • Develop and file appropriate syllabi for each course taught, ensuring that each syllabus conforms to required and approved curriculum, has appropriate content and pedagogy, and reflects currency in the field;
  • Recommend textbooks and other instructional materials, including classroom and laboratory equipment, to the dean;
  • Keep students informed about their progress through the prompt evaluation and grading of papers and other work;
  • Maintain and report accurate and complete scholastic records, including attendance records;
  • Participate in program and curriculum review and development;
  • Develop and assess student learning and program-level outcomes;
  • Utilize the results of student learning outcomes assessment to make improvements in teaching and learning;
  • Post and maintain office hours for student consultations;
  • Participate in student recruitment and articulation programs;
  • Participate in faculty recruitment and peer evaluation;
  • Collegially participate in department, college, and discipline-specific activities;
  • Participate in assignments and activities that support accreditation, institutional planning, and institutional effectiveness;
  • Participate in college governance, including serving on various committees;
  • Participate in local, state, regional, and national professional activities and organizations;
  • Engages in professional development activities that lead to continuous quality improvement of one’s knowledge, skills, and abilities as it pertains to effective performance of the job functions;
  • Supports partnerships and collaborative projects with 4-year institutions and industry employers to support student access to internships, summer bridge activities, and career exploration opportunities;
  • Attend faculty meetings, college assemblies, professional development and orientation activities, and other meetings as called by the dean, vice president, superintendent/president, or designee.

    Supplemental Information

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

    A Master’s in any biological science

    OR a Bachelor’s in any biological science AND a Master’s in biochemistry, biophysics, or marine science

    OR the equivalent.

    NOTE: If you do not meet the minimum qualifications as stated, please review the current equivalency process.

    Preference may be given to candidates with prior teaching experience at the community college level.
    Preference may be given to candidates with prior teaching experience in microbiology courses.
    Preference may be given to candidates who have completed advanced-level microbiology coursework.
    Preference may be given to candidates who have performed research or professional work involving microbiology.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT;

    Full-time, tenure-track Biology faculty position.

    The starting faculty salary range is $70,608.00 to $149,154.00 annually based on 175 days per academic year. The successful candidate’s starting salary will be based on verified education and teaching experience.

    The district provides health benefits, which currently consist of full coverage for medical, dental, and vision insurance for employees and a high percentage of coverage for eligible dependents. The employee assistance program provides basic life insurance for employees only. STRS (state teacher retirement system).
