Job description

Blagoevgrad (BG)

The American University in Bulgaria (AUBG) invites applications and nominations for the position of President.

Located in the university town of Blagoevgrad, surrounded by mountains and history, AUBG stands as one of the region’s most respected liberal arts institutions. Founded in 1991, in the hopeful years following the end of the communist era, AUBG was built on a bold idea: that education rooted in freedom, inquiry, and civic responsibility could help shape a new generation of leaders for an open world.

Today, AUBG offers a rigorous and globally recognized education that combines the strengths of the American liberal arts tradition with a distinctly European perspective. Students earn dual degrees accredited in both the United States and Bulgaria, ensuring their qualifications are valued across continents. The University’s programs — from Business Administration and Computer Science to Journalism and Mass Communication — consistently rank among the strongest in the region.

AUBG’s community is genuinely international. More than forty nationalities come together here — a diverse student body of exceptional academic achievement, taught and mentored by a faculty drawn from across the globe. The result is a campus alive with dialogue, creativity, and collaboration, where learning crosses boundaries and ideas take shape.

The next President will join a university with firm foundations and ambitious horizons. Reporting to the Board of Trustees, the president will guide AUBG’s strategy for sustainable growth and regional impact — expanding student numbers while safeguarding the close-knit, high-quality, and community-oriented character that defines the University. The president will strengthen academic excellence, ensure continued alignment with both U.S. and Bulgarian accreditation standards, and build the partnerships and visibility needed for AUBG’s next phase of influence.

Priorities will include advancing faculty and program development, deepening international and regional collaborations, broadening fundraising and alumni engagement, and nurturing a vibrant campus life where intellectual curiosity and community spirit thrive.

This is a rare opportunity for an imaginative, strategic, and grounded leader — someone with a PhD and a deep understanding of the liberal arts ethos: academic freedom, pluralism, and civic engagement. They will bring integrity and approachability in equal measure, representing AUBG with confidence and conviction to students, faculty, alumni, and partners across Bulgaria, the region, and the world.
