School of Engineering: Engineering Science and Management

The Vanderbilt University School of Engineering invites applications for a full-time Professor of the Practice position.  This position will teach for both the MS in Business and Technology (MSBT) program and for the Engineering Management Undergraduate Semester program. It will be based at our NYC-Vanderbilt campus and will begin in Fall 2026. The successful candidate will be able to teach at least four of the following courses:

  • Program and Project Management Strategies (graduate level): This course will discuss the management of small- to medium-sized projects ($10k to $10M), with some introduction to the management of very large and complex projects. Concepts that will be introduced include the engineering design process, design tools, software-assisted decision-making and professional management skills.
  • Intellectual Property in Technology and Business (graduate level): This course offers an assessment of intellectual property law for a technical, non-legal audience. It will cover different forms of IP protection (e.g., trademark, copyright, patents), with a primary focus on patents. The course will discuss the use of intellectual property on business strategy and how the available forms of IP affect business and technology development decisions. The course also discusses open-source software and its impact, and IP valuation.

Statistical modeling in a practical and applied perspective; application of data analytics to bridge the gap between data and decisions; fundamentals of design of experiments.
  • Probabilistic Methods in Engineering Design (graduate level): Applications of probabilistic methods in the analysis and synthesis of engineering systems. Review of basic probability concepts, random variables and distributions, modeling and quantification of uncertainty, testing the validity of assumed models, linear regression and correlation analyses, Monte Carlo simulation, reliability y analysis and reliability-based design. Prerequisite: undergraduate course in probability/statistics
  • Applied Behavioral Science (undergraduate level):  Leadership styles, power team building, conflict resolution, management resolution, interviewing techniques.
  • Program and Project Management (undergraduate level): Scheduling, cost estimation/predictions, network analysis, optimization, resource/load leveling, risk/mitigation, quality/testing, international projects. Term project required. Provides validated preparation for the Project Management Institute CAPM certification.
  • Enterprise System Design (undergraduate level): Design of complex enterprise systems and processes including enterprise requirements analysis, process-mapping, modeling, performance measurement, benchmarking, solution development, and change management

In addition to teaching, the Professor of the Practice will oversee the undergraduate Structured Internship program and, in collaboration with the Vanderbilt University’s Owen Graduate School of Management, manage the MSBT internship program.  An important role for this position is to develop industry partnerships to strengthen professional connections for students and the programs.
