Humanities & Sciences: School of Science and Engineering: Physics and Engineering Physics

Location: New Orleans, LA

Description:

Tulane University, one of the nation’s premier research institutions, invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position in Mechanical Engineering within the Department of Physics and Engineering Physics. Our department is committed to fostering interdisciplinary and collaborative excellence by integrating physics with core engineering disciplines. We seek to substantially grow our Mechanical Engineering program, which currently includes a minor and a master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering alongside our established undergraduate major in Engineering Physics and PhD program in Materials Physics & Engineering. As a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities (AAU), Tulane is committed to advancing research and education at the highest levels.

The Department’s unique position, housed with the School of Science and Engineering (SSE), provides exceptional opportunities for collaboration across disciplines and supports the development of cutting-edge research and educational initiatives at the intersection of mechanical engineering and the broader STEM fields. SSE is distinctive as the only academic unit at a major research university to merge the behavioral sciences, physical sciences, life sciences, engineering, and mathematics, which provides an unusually rich environment for innovative programs and interdisciplinary research.

Tulane University, one of the nation’s premier research institutions, is classified by the Carnegie Foundation as an R1 (Very High Research Activity) and Community Engaged university. Tulane University offers a collaborative environment for interdisciplinary interactions, a strong public service theme, and a commitment to science as a major thrust of research, scholarship, and education.

Qualifications:

For this position, preference will be given to applicants with a strong record of experimental mechanical engineering research in areas such as, but not limited to: aerodynamics, robotics and control systems, advanced manufacturing, sustainable energy, solid mechanics and tribology, computational mechanics, micro/nano systems, mechanical engineering applications of machine learning, or thermofluid systems. We prioritize interdisciplinary research and teaching with other faculty in our School of Science and Engineering, as well as other Schools at Tulane. The new faculty member will have the opportunity to participate in the expansion of core user facilities in the new Paul Hall, including a new Micro/Nanofabrication Facility. Applicants must have a doctorate in mechanical engineering or a related field, postdoctoral or comparable experience, demonstrated success in research, and a commitment to excellence in teaching and mentorship. Preferred candidates will be at the Assistant Professor level, but more senior applications are welcome and will be considered. The position will include a competitive salary and startup package.
