Lake Superior State University (LSSU) invites applications and nominations for an accomplished, strategic, and collaborative leader to serve as Vice President for Finance and Operations (VPFO). This executive leadership role offers the opportunity to shape the University’s financial and operational direction while supporting LSSU’s mission of academic excellence, access, and community engagement.

About the Role

Reporting directly to the President, the Vice President for Finance and Operations serves as the University’s chief financial officer and provides executive oversight for all business, financial, and operational functions. As a member of the President’s Cabinet, the VPFO plays a key role in institutional strategy, long-range planning, and stewardship of University resources.

The VPFO leads financial planning, budget development and oversight, investment and debt management, facilities planning and infrastructure, capital projects, purchasing, and non-employment contract management. The role also supports Advancement protocols, works closely with the Board of Trustees (including the Treasurer), and serves as a trusted advisor to the President.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide executive leadership for all finance and operations functions of the University
  • Lead long-term financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and resource allocation
  • Oversee accounting, payroll, purchasing, contracts, grants, and financial systems
  • Provide strategic oversight of facilities planning, infrastructure, and capital projects
  • Partner with institutional research and leadership to analyze data and develop predictive financial models
  • Supervise, mentor, and support professional and administrative staff
  • Serve as a senior advisor to the President, Cabinet, and Board of Trustees
  • Promote transparency, accountability, and ethical decision-making across all areas of responsibility

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: Master’s degree in business, finance, public administration, or a related field; OR a bachelor’s degree in a related field combined with four (4) years of progressively responsible senior-level experience in finance or operations
  • Experience: Minimum of eight (8) years of progressively responsible senior-level experience in finance, operations, or a closely related field in addition to the noted education, within higher education, K-12 education, or a comparable public, private, or nonprofit organization
  • Demonstrated knowledge of accounting, financial management, and budget analysis
  • Extensive experience with financial and management systems
  • Knowledge of payroll, purchasing, contracts, and grants administration
  • Proven ability to develop and implement short- and long-term strategic plans
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and decision-making skills
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and support professional and administrative teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in economics, finance, or a related field
  • CPA or equivalent professional certification
  • Ten (10) or more years of senior leadership experience
  • Experience overseeing finance and operations functions within a complex organization
  • Senior-level experience managing financial systems
  • Understanding of public higher education finance, operations, and culture
  • Experience with facilities management, campus safety, and personnel administration
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
