The Vice Provost for Academic Affairs at Vermont State University provides institutional leadership for academic administration and operations across the university schools and academic departments. Working closely with the Provost, academic administration, faculty and various governing bodies, the Vice Provost actively engages in curricularformulation, program array, and implementation. The Vice Provost is responsible for leading initiatives related to faculty recruitment, appointment, evaluation, promotion and tenure, professional development, faculty policy oversight, and provides direction and support for deans and department chairs to ensure alignment with university policies andcollective bargaining agreements, system-level regulations, and state laws. The Vice Provost collaborates closely with the Provost to foster and lead an academic culture that positions Vermont State University as a leader in pedagogical innovation, expansion of educational access, and a venue for both traditional and nontraditional educational opportunities, novel research, and industry and community engagement.

This is an executive position at the university that, in addition to leading a major function at the organization, has enterprise-wide scope and leads and manages the staff of the unit to strategically accomplish university goals

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Strategic Academics:As a member of the Vermont State University (VTSU) Executive Leadership Team, the Vice Provost helps set the strategic direction for academic programming, fosters an environment of collaboration, and manages a growing portfolio of programming in education, research, and innovation. The Vice Provost will work closely with the Provost and Deans to manage and evolve the program array.
  • Strategic Operations:Collaborates with other VTSU leaders on the allocation and alignment of resources (including financial, space, faculty and staff resources) to support and enhance academic programming in furtherance of the vision and goals set by the Chancellorand President.
  • External Partnerships:Leads, supports, and contributes to efforts to identify and grow financial resources and strategic partnerships to support academic programing at VTSU.
  • Faculty Lifecycle Oversight:Oversees and implements policies and procedures related to faculty recruitment, appointment, onboarding, evaluation, promotion, tenure, and post-tenure review, ensuring compliance with institutional, system-wide, and state regulations.
  • Policy Development and Interpretation:Collaborates with faculty governance bodies, human resources, and legal counsel to review, draft, and interpret faculty-related policies and agreements.
  • Faculty Development and Mentorship:Leads and coordinates university-wide faculty development programs focused on teaching excellence, scholarly productivity, leadership training, and career progression.
  • Shared Governance and Collaboration:Partners with Faculty Assembly, department chairs, and deans to maintain and support principles of shared governance in decision-making processes related to faculty affairs. Fosters relationships that encourages collaboration and supports academic excellence.
  • Data Management and Reporting:Collects, analyzes, and disseminates data related to faculty demographics and academic programs, appointments, evaluations, and workload. Provides strategic insight to support academic planning and accreditation efforts

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Earned terminal degree (Ph.D., Ed.D., or equivalent) from an accredited institution.
  • Academic credentials meriting appointment as a tenured professor at Vermont State University.
  • Minimum of five years of progressively responsible academic administrative experience (e.g., department chair, associate dean, dean or comparable position) culminating in a significant academic leadership role.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of faculty affairs processes in a public university context, including shared governance and personnel policy

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in a collective bargaining environment or working with faculty unions.
  • Familiarity with state higher education systems and legislative policy affecting faculty.
  • Documented strategic leadership experience including formal and informal strategic planning resulting in program success.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

  • Significant experience in curriculum development and student instruction in a higher education setting
  • Experience managing complex interpersonal interactions and successful change management
  • Commitment to educational access manifested in documentable professional outcomes
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
  • Experience with multi-campus programming and operations, preferably in a leadership context, demonstrated through collaboration and cohesive mission focus across sites
  • Experience in personnel management and program evaluation

LOCATION: This position may be based on any of the Vermont State University’s campuses. Partial remote work from home possible, but the successful candidate will establish a primary office location on a campus and occasionally travel between campuses.

The budgeted salary range for this position is $150,000 – $167,000
