Job Summary
The School of Education at The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) invites applicants for one full-time, visiting non-tenure-track, Assistant Professor position beginning August 2025 with requirements to be physically present on campus. This is an exciting opportunity to join a large school that is home to approximately 1,200 students in six program areas: 1) Elementary Education, 2) Special Education, 3) Secondary Alternate Route, 4) Higher Education Administration, 5) Educational Administration, and 6) Educational Research.

While the area of specialization for this position is open, we are particularly interested in candidates with expertise working with P-12 achievement data, educating all learning populations, fostering community and stakeholder relations, and developing operational best practices for school leaders. We seek applicants committed to impactful teaching and engagement with our community schools while preparing doctoral students to become thoughtful, productive researchers and practitioners. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary work that impacts educational policy and practice as well as contributes to the research and teaching missions of the School of Education at the graduate level.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Collaborating with colleagues on program development and assessment
  2. Teaching and mentoring student research across programs.
  3. Engaging with community partner districts and schools.
  4. Contributing to the program and profession through service activities.
  5. Performing other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Doctoral degree in Educational Leadership, Educational Research, or closely related field (by August 2025).
Exhibits the potential for impactful teaching and mentoring doctoral students through capstone projects experiences.
At least three years of experience in a leadership role in K-12 education.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of P-12 Leadership research associated with building/district level leadership.
  • Knowledge of principles governing P-12 operations.
  • Knowledge of laws governing P-12 operations.
  • The ability to deliver accurate, concise and quality communication (verbal and written) in a timely manner to everyone.
  • The ability to set clear performance expectations and provision of meaningful feedback.
  • The ability to use technology in the online learning environment.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience teaching students in an online learning environment within Educational Administration at the university level.
Active principal and/or superintendent license.
Experience in P-12 administration at the district level.
